A couple of my neighbors have big dogs, and I get along fine with all of them. But one has a Yorkie (about the size of a rat), and it threatens all sorts of death and destruction every time it sees me.
I know one woman who rescues Chihuahuas, she has more than 20, most of them with some kind of behavior problems. I know another person who rescues pit bulls, she has about a dozen. They are both remarkable people, not sure which one of them I admire more.
The purpose of the Lhasa Apso allegedly was to wake up the mastiffs. None of ours were yipper-yappers, but if we were holding one and a stranger reached out to pet him, flying teeth so fast no one knew what happened.
All dogs think that they are wolves. Little dogs think that they are bigger than they are. Big dogs think that they are smaller. Big dogs are afraid of little dogs because little dogs can attack where it hurts.

Small dogs have their bravery inversely proportional to their size. Chihuahuas and Poms are an example.
