Grandpa has reached the point where life is no longer fresh and new. It’s mostly ‘adjustments’ and repeats of many things and a little less sweet. He and I share that.
I would much rather take the time to have a great pickle (my Mom’s were certainly worth it). Life may be uncertain, but you can’t live in fear of it ending before you’re ready.
It’s optimism out of control, that’s what I’m going to claim. You get your hands on something wonderful, and you think there is somehow going to be an even more wonderful day to use it in the future. So you save it. And it’s not like that wonderful day never comes; it’s more like the wonderful day does come, so you think, well, there must be an even more wonderful day on the way, and the moment passes. The cookies get stale, the shirt goes out of style, the olive oil turns rancid. And you wonder if using a thing up too fast is maybe better than having it too long.
Whatever it is, I’ve got a long, unfortunate history of it. And when I saw a version of the old advice about don’t pickle things, it struck a nerve, and I knew I had to adapt it for comic strip use. Right away.

I hate both cucumbers and pickles. But, as Frazz should know, I’ve never heard of anyone using cucumber juice to stave off cramps on a bike ride.
