My Russian Blue Ashley has only a few things in life that really excite him, laser toys which get him charging about the house like a greyhound and like many other cats he loves a cardboard box.
I got a new desk chair and the box it was packaged in has provided him with hours of entertainment. He creates a sizeable mess with chewing and clawing it to pieces and so it’s located in a discrete location behind the sofa, which means the noises he makes can be distracting when trying to watch television.
Next to the honeybee-human symbiosis, cats’ fascination with boxes has got to be one of the most serendipitous phenomena in nature. That a simply by-product of mail order shipping can serve both as free entertainment center and the instinctive icon of low-maintenance care among domestic companion animals is truly amazing.
Cats aren’t all that different from People-kittens in their fascination with boxes. My mom has pictures of me & my sibs playing in the house she made out of the box our washing machine came in 60 years ago.

In regard to the strip today..I have never had a cat that cared about going in a box, or a paper bag, for that matter

This is especially funny if you’ve seen a Simpsons episode where Bart’s class takes a boring field trip to the box factory.
