I said some time ago that this would end up on the high dive tower. Mike has an affinity for ending stories on precarious peaks and Zelda was a no brainer. Think Gruesome, Abner Kadaver, the Margies, Bardoll, etc.
Zelda and Three-in-One will struggle on top of the tower. Tracy will arrive and stand in the center ring for a few months. Then, Mr. Pops will shoot the Pig-on-Wheels cannon and Splitface will take the fall.
I actually think that Haf-and-Haf will buy the farm at the end of this story.
Haf-and-Haf (aka Splitface) is pretty much a one-note character even though he has appeared in the strip before. His usual goal is to kill Zelda. But Zelda, herself, is not sympathetic enough to keep investing the reader on the longer term. This particular story is simply a revised and less violent version of the previous Haf-and-Haf tales.
When Haf-and-Haf was first convicted and sent to prison, he was given plastic surgery which corrected the side of his face that was scarred. Upon his release, he got a job at the zoo.
Even though he assured Tracy that he was rehabilitated, he schemed to kill Zelda. He took a poisonous snake from the zoo and put it in the bed of Zelda’s motel room where Zelda was bitten. Fortunately, she was on the phone with Tracy at the time so he was able to call an ambulance and get her to the hospital in time for the anti-venom. However, Zelda claimed she did not see H&H there (but did see him).
Although she was supposed to stay in the hospital, Zelda stole a nurses uniform and sneaked out. She was determined to kill H&H or at least get revenge. She went to the zoo and splashed his face with drain cleaner acid which disfigured him a second time. In retaliation, he threw her in the lion pit where Tracy had to save her from being eaten.
This is Zelda’s old dive tower from her days with Circling Bros. Circus and it is housed here in their warehouse. Her current dive tower is set up at Locher Auditorium where she will be performing in her own show (not Circling Bros.).
