I wonder if this is meant to be read as the man walking past on multiple occasions, or as one continuous interaction. I’m going with the latter because I find the mental image of Nancy and Sluggo making and installing each new sign by way of reply while their critic stands by patiently waiting funnier.
But…. but….. I am so confused…. Nancy and Sluggo are not showing an air of detachment! How do I or the old guy then know how to interpret (or mis-interpret) their intent?!?!?! :)
Actually, when I first read today…. the punchline that popped out to me (take it with a grain of salt, I have been watching a helluva lot of CNN lately) was that Olivia was making a sly comment about a potential change in January 2021 in terms of the White House. Olivia’s work may truthfully have NOTHING to do with politics today, I can grant that…. but the “2021” sign at the end guided my mind there.
