She must REALLY love him! That’s the only explanation!

After seeing the recent tragic news from Massachusetts my wife came over to me, gave me a big hug and said “I forgive you”. Being the clueless male that I am I asked “Why?”. She said “For your pigheaded insistence of never owning a home with natural gas”. She has always wanted a gas stove.

My grandfather was a boilerman at a factory. He had a coal fired furnace and it was a lot of work to keep heat in the house and dirty. When I was a kid I would love to watch the coal truck come to make a delivery into the coal bin. He finally switched to gas which was a lot better. I, myself, have a coal stove insert in my fireplace. It works well when I lose power and need heat and some where to cook.

My grandmother, too, had a coal furnace. I remember coal being delivered and adding it to the furnace. Yeah, dirty job. Then she put in a gas furnace. I used to want a gas furnace because that’s what I grew up with, but I’ve had electric for years now, so I guess it doesn’t matter anymore.

If this is the story arc I think it is, Roger is about to cause a disaster that makes his barbecue fiascos look tame in comparison!

I have had gas furnaces my entire life, but have never had one that didn’t have a constantly-on pilot light (including on the ancient converted coal furnace my parents aad when I was a kid); if it’s out, the gas is off, and you light it the moment the gas is back on, if you want to continue existing.

Oh look whose complaining about being cold, the woman who refused to raise the thermostat when her kids milk turned into ice cream while they were eating their cereal, or when her oldest son had a severe fever, or chastised her family for “only wearing one sweater” to try and stay warm in the house, or any of the tons of “house is cold but I’m not paying for the extra heat” jokes they made over the years.

This was back before the gags where Andy doesn’t want to use the thermostat even when it’s impossibly cold.

I live in Mexico City, where there is no central heating. When it gets chilly in the winter, all we can do is pile on the blankets and take an extra shot of tequila with our evening snacks!

Why does Roger, who’s on the left side of the bed in the first panel, turn to his own left (away from Andy) in the second panel to speak and then suddenly reäppear in the third panel, but turned to his right facing Andy?
