At one time you could get your own vacation photos made into a View-Master disc.

“Although there’s no direct translation for ‘fernweh’ in the English language, the literal translation is ‘far-sickness’- it’s one of those compound words I was talking about! You know those feelings of itchy feet, opening up every travel deal that finds its way into your email inbox and daydreaming a little too much about your next adventure during your coffee break? Well, the word ‘Fernweh’ sums up all these feelings and more.

If you were to translate Fernweh into English, then its equivalent would be ‘wanderlust’. Ironically, Wanderlust is a loan word from German which came to have a different meaning in English. The word was originally a German verb ‘Wandern’ (‘to hike’) and still means this in German to this day."

Suddenly wishing to be anywhere but here. I’ve been there. The pay is okay, but the hours are terrible.

On this subject, I submit my ever-growing list of “compact” words – formerly labelled “untranslatable” but that’s a mistaken concept. They’re just words that can’t usually be translated with a single gloss.

Looks like an ad for Nair that the marketing department rejected.

I do love the vocabulary expansion and the Viewmaster artwork … but it seemed to me all the good comments had been taken.

That was interesting. I decided I’d look up how much a fern might weigh. Unfortunately every link until I ran out of patience was a link to some British person named Fern and her weight.

So here’s a picture of a Fragile Fern I took earlier this spring:

Yeah, I’m pretty sure I’d ache, too, if I wore my Viewmaster there. A longing for places far away is a commonplace, however, and one oft exploited by travel agents who ache for Gelt.

On the other hand (right?), I prefer my own slides or photos (lately, digital, natch) to anything in those over-saturated travelogue visuals.

    Où sont les neiges d’antan?
