I moved to Germany to get away from that, among other reasons. There are shopping centers, motels and gas stations (Linus seems to have forgotten to mention those) but there are fewer and they’re not hard to avoid.
I remember one time my family was vacationing. We were staying at “South of the Border” (look it up) one night. As we were packing the car to leave, the people in the next room were doing likewise. The wife & my mother saw each other & recognized each other! The wife was a cashier at my mother’s favorite grocery store!
Now the chains are in practically every neighborhood. Malls and malls of the same stores about a mile or two apart. Until they realize they’re overbuilt, and they close a few hundred or a few thousand.
Malls are dying. They were originally designed as a one stop shopping experience but with the advent of online shopping, brick and mortar stores or disappearing at an alarming rate.

A friend in the US says her grandkids started school July 24. I remember starting school at the beginning of September!

This is a phenomenon that really started to kick in in the early 1970s when huge chain businesses pretty much took over everywhere.

Maybe he’s a “Day Tripper”? I’ve seen Malls so big, they have their own Malls.

Nonsense, I may not have travelled much but every place I’ve visited is nothing like where I live.

Maybe your family could have waited until the 21st and go on an eclipse chase.
