Who would have thought that there was ANY candidate that would make us nostalgic for Goldwater.

The day will come when we will look back on the present day and reminisce about how great things were then, compared to now.Now go and enjoy the rest of the day.

Do any of ya’ll actually remember Goldwater? No. I wasn’t a fan, either, but conservative that he was, it was an honest, pragmatic conservatism. Republicans have forgotten who he was and what he tried to tell them:.“Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they’re sure trying to do so, it’s going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can’t and won’t compromise. I know, I’ve tried to deal with them.”.I also thought well of him when he said all good Christians should kick Jerry Falwell in the nuts.

Goldwater was a great man. He lost in a landslide due to LBJ’s massive slander campaign against him. After his election, Johnson turned out to be much worse than anything he said Barry G. would do (short of the infamous little girl/nuclear bomb commercial). I was 16 in ’64 and campaigned like crazy for Barry. Still think he would have made a great president.

    Very well put.

Goldwater was an interestingly honest man.

People can think what they will, but he did a helluva lot for Arizonans.

Like you, I wasn’t a fan politically, but years later, I had the pleasure of getting to know him, a little, and found him to be extremely articulate, and prescient .

He was a political pragmatist, not the ideologue that his enemies, and segments of his own party, portrayed him to be.

He called it as he saw it, and minced no words. If he could see what’s become of his party today, I’d bet he’d say: " I warned you damned fools, that this was going to happen ! "

I was no fan of Goldwater’s politics, but I came to have a grudging respect for him. He was the one who went to Nixon and told him it was all over, time to leave. And during Iran-Contra he lambasted the Reagan administration for their behavior.

I love your humor and style. I just don’t understand some so smart can fall for the liberal lies. When Government takes care of us we have no freedoms

In theory Dad is right; but in practice it is the opposite en the case of too many. So Danae discovers what is backwards has been going on. And Kate is right

Night-Gaunt49As I said at the time, LBJ is like Theodore Roosevelt: a good domestic program ruined by a criminal foreign policy.

I for one am not nostalgic for Goldwater..That’s OK… I’m pretty sure Goldwater isn’t nostalgic for you either..BTW, as has been mentioned in several comments here – look at what we got after Goldwater was defeated.

The only thing that saved LBJ’s presidency was his support for civil rights for black Americans. Otherwise his atrocity of Vietnam was the worst thing he could have done.…That’s kind of ironic when you consider the fact that it was the Republicans that got the civil rights act passed so Johnson could sign it.The Democrats in congress at that time did not support the civil rights legislation.

Night-Gaunt49You do every now and then. Most posters agree with each other on occasion if they are not doctrinaire robots. So why the adversarial attitude?
