Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson for June 08, 2016
Transcript:
Marigold: Unicorns actually have a legend involving dioramas. A unicorn called Robin Velvet Eyes had a profound disagreement with his mother when they were making one about a llama farm. One night before bed, they fought over the punctuation on a single miniature sign, after which they were both in therapy for years. This is known as the llama diorama pajama comma drama trauma. Phoebe: Unicorns have a low standard for "legends".

The fact that it was with his mother makes it the llama diaroma mama pajama comma drama trauma.

If this were Pearls Before Swine, the punchline in panel four would be in the second to last panel, with the kicker following.

Did you hear that Michelle Obama is raising alpacas on the White House lawn? They’re called Obama’s mama’s llamas.

Dana, Did you come up with the ending before the beginning on this joke? I love it! My cheeks hurt a little from rereading it and smiling hard.
NWdryad almost 8 years ago

Umm…why is everyone talking about Stephan Pastis? Is he the only one to ever do puns like these? Come on, this type of humor has been around longer than Pearls Before Swine.

Ooooohhh, be careful Dana. You have your foot on the edge of the slipper slope!

When it comes to puns and wordplay in a comic, nothing is better than Frank & Ernest.

Am I the only one who thought of Dr. Seuss when reading this strip?
ProfMontgomery almost 8 years ago
We need to isolate Pastis from other cartoonists. He’s contagious.

Then there’s the “Unicorn to conform and transform to uniform vs. free form art form” affair when there was an argument about decorating with paintings and whether or not they should match the color of the couch.

Miss Simpson, have you been hanging out with Stephan Pastis by any chance?
He’s the only comic artist I can think of who uses jokes this bad

Funny, but please don’t do puns too often. That’s why I quit “Pearls Before Swine.”

This reminds me of that Mark Twain story about the Hottentotenstrottelmutterattentäterlattengitterwetterkotterbeutelratte

It does of course require an American accent for “comma” and “trauma” to rhyme with “diorama” etc.

Did they listen to “La Bamba” while making it?
