The back seats are reserved for kids whose last name begins with W, Y or Z.

Linus is missing the point of that scripture, which is that the reason for sitting in the lowest place to begin with is to give the host (in this case, Miss Othmar) a chance to ask the invited guest to move up front if no one of higher rank is in attendance — which is exactly what Miss Othmar did. Incidentally, that admonition of Jesus was intended specifically as a rebuke to the Pharisees of His time, because they had the rather bad habit of deliberately seeking out the uppermost seats for themselves, which could potentially embarrass the host if a person of higher rank or social standing should happen to enter later — the host would then be obligated as a matter of protocol to ask the Pharisee to move in order to give the higher-ranking guest his proper seat.

Wasn’t until junior high that I know longer had the whole assigned seating thing. starting in 7th grade had the luxury of being able to do what Violet and Patty are doing. 1st grade through 6th was assigned a desk and could only move if the desks were moved (physically moved by the students at the teacher’s instructions) or if you were assigned to a new desk.

I’m short-sighted, always had to sit down front to see much. Got into the habit of sitting second row right, if I could choose, as sitting in the front row was uncomfortable in our small classrooms. The doorway was always to the left of the front row so anyone coming in had to walk right down the line.

Well, it worked, didn’t it? She did tell him “friend, go up higher.”

Sadly, that’s so true. The biggest reason I hate liberalism.

Was Marcie always in the back row behind Peppermint Patty and Franklin in most 1980’s-1990’s Peanuts school related comic strips?

I liked to sit in the back so I could watch everyone else ahead of me.

My teachers also had me sit in the Front, I’m pretty sure it wasn’t because they liked me. I suspect it was to Keep an Eye on me!

I’m not at all religious (Relax, I’m not an atheist either) but I have 2 Bibles in my bedroom which I’m going to keep. I may need them for comfort sometime in my life.

Our elementary school desks were permanent since we didn’t move between classes and we stored stuff in the desks. We moved between classes in high school so the desks were just small tables with seating. And yet, once we found our seats in a class at the start of the year we kept that seat in that classroom until the end of the year. It was the same thing in university. I think I only ever changed my seat twice in university; once to sit beside a very pretty girl (who was way out of my league) and once to to avoid the body odor of another student which was literally making me sick. I sat beside him, rather than above him, and that made all the difference (and it turned out that except for the body odor he was a pretty good guy).

This is why Linus is my favorite character in the strip. He is wise, competent, and deliberate in all he does. Quite the philosopher, too.

Not to mention that he must have been moved up a few grades, since Violet and Patty were already near school age before he was even born, and now he shares a classroom with them. :)

The elementary school I went to featured girls in the front and boys in the back of the room. I had a hearing loss (my wife thinks it’s a listening problem) so the teacher realigned the classroom so that the dividing line was diagonal and I ended up in the 2nd row on the far left (a boy in the front row would have been too radical).

I loved sitting in or near the front. I was shorter than most of the others and I felt like I learned more when I was in front. But I was a W -- end of story.
