Joan: Mom says you want to postpone the wedding.
Val: What choice do I have? ?
Joan: Phil would happily walk down the aisle on crutches.
Val: I'm too afraid, sis.
Afraid of losing another husband.
Val & Baldo’s dad should marry, they both been thru the same thing & they can understand each other, wouldn’t that be an interesting consolidation of comic strips?
Give me a break. How could she have not thought about the fact that Phil is a cop, & could lose his life in the line of duty? So it is better not to get married on the chance she could lose him? That is not logical. " It is better to have loved & lost, than it is not to have loved at all." So not getting married would make a difference if Phil bites it down the road? Is she going to sever her relationship with Phil so as not to get hurt again? She is being an idiot. If she continues to see & love him, she needs to marry him. How could she expect him to reciprocate in love if she can’t commit? What about his feelings & thoughts? This is dumb.
The way I see it, she loves him so even if he died as her boyfriend that would be just as sad to her as if he was her husband so what’s the difference? I wouldn’t let that get in the way of marriage.
I’m having alittle trouble with Phil’s vocation being reason Val can’t marry him. Been married to a cop 28 years and never worried. Even in hostage situations. (There were three of those). Always felt he was a man doing a man’s job. The profession provided extremely well for our family. Things (life) happens. Car/train/plane accident — sickness (cancer ALS etc). Ok all you feminists don’t go screamin at me over the “man’s job” line. I’m old fashioned and liked being home with the kids. I never put down my friends who had a career and a nanny. Also I’m still laughing WITH Baslim saying “don’t shout”.
Val didn’t say she wouldn’t marry Phil, she said she is afraid of losing him. Fear is a powerful, usually irrational force, making us do and think things that on examination really don’t make much sense. Let’s cut her some slack.
Actually, it’s basically the same. Whether it’s a death or divorce, some people can be afraid to take the chance again because of the heartache of what happened before.
Catch 22: As long as Phil is her significant other, the fear of losing him will remain. The only way to lose the fear, is to give him up. Then she’s lost him.
There are some thoughtful comments here, and some “folks need to gain more insight into human behavior” ones. I hope this can be a positive learning experience for all, me included.
Whenever one of my younger sisters would freak out about something, I would hug them, too, and also encourage them to go through with it anyway. That’s the full-time big sister job.
Val, you’ve been dating a cop for years. You’d be as heartbroken whether you are a girlfriend or a wife if he dies in line of duty. Marriage is just a piece of paper and does not change the years you have had with Phil or dictates emotions.
If she loves him, get married. If something happens to him on the job, she will be better off financially than if she wasn’t married. Not getting married if you are soul mates is just stupid in that situation.

I understand what she is feeling, but she needs to get over it and consider his feelings. He is already in pain and does not deserve to be deserted.

Joan, if he dies you lose him either way, whether or not you have the piece of paper. At least married you gain some legal rights.

It’s a comic strip, folks. Lighten up. The creator has a story arc in progress – just sit back and enjoy it.

Did they ever set a wedding date? You can’t postpone something unless it has a date.
