    When our son was 5 years old, we took him to the circus. While we were walking through the grounds, he came face to face (or rather more like face to rotund belly) with a very sad faced clown. The two of of them locked eyes for several minutes and I could tell my son was starting to get really nervous about the encounter when suddenly the clown made his hat pop up into the air, catching it when it came back down. My son totally broke into genuine laughter and I’m pretty sure he was over any fear of clowns from then on.
