Gunther demonstrates the wisdom of sewing your own tux rather than renting one. Rosa demonstrates why she will do well in the Peace Corps under difficult circumstances. Luann demonstrates, loudly.

How did they get grass stains and torn garments all the way up to their shoulders, when the grass is at most knee-high? Just what the heck were they doing in that field, anyway? Is the “field” actually a metaphor for what Hamlet called “country matters”?

Gunther is gonna get lucky tonight (even if the strip hides it)! Rosa is really taken with the thrill of the adventure, and with Gunther’s combination of ingenuity and new-found willingness to get a little crazy.

And if Luann is smart, she’ll relax and enjoy dancing in her stocking-feet, and basking in the attention of having a good story to tell.

I agree with thoughts above. Rosa and Gunther are finding each other and how they complement each other. He plans and thinks, she acts and leads. If they were ever in jail, I see Gunther figuring how to get out and Rosa leading the way. Nice couple.

We haven’t seen the end of this arc yet, and Greg has shown us some interesting twists before. I’m interested to see what happens next with Luann and Quill. So far, though, I’d say Gunther is showing Rosa a side of himself that she may not have fully appreciated before: He’s resourceful, adaptable and has plenty of initiative when he needs it.

Staying with the limo may turn out to have been a better choice, but they didn’t know that. My experience with the Auto Club, at least, suggests that you’re taking a chance if you need help where there’s no address, just a random field. That driver could be stuck there for days waiting for a tow truck who can’t find him. Then again, maybe the limo service has their own response team. Can you tell I’m overthinking this?

I also like the suggestion that neither Rosa nor Gunther seems worried about their clothes. As long as they’re on schedule, they’re still prepared to have a good time.

For that matter, it wouldn’t surprise me if Gunther has packed along an emergency kit capable of handling a whole lot of emergencies. I’ve known costumers who travel to faraway cities with science fiction outfits they’ve spent months working on and they bloody well do have as good a repair kit as they can manage, which they’ll take with them Ev. Ree. Where! Costumers can fix things, and they can do it when seconds count!

It would absolutely be in character for Gunther to have a good kit along, easily up to repairing a broken heel. It’s even reasonable to suppose that Quill knows this, having lived with Gunther for some weeks now.

And it would also be in character for G & R to show up at the prom looking like they do right now, and have a fine old time telling the story and inventing details like the rabid bull, the alligator pond and the buffalo stampede. Our self-absorbed heroine would at least have the opportunity to see how her two adaptable friends are coping with the situation. Quill will have an opportunity to see how Luann copes, which — well, let’s see what happens.

This is what happens when you set unrealistic expectations. “Prom has to be the best day of my life.” “My wedding has to be perfect.” The stories of what went wrong will be much more fun in the years to come—of course, I guess you have to be old to appreciate that. I am wondering if this is the first sign of a break with Quill and Luann.

Yeah, expect that is the thing Rosa always complains about. She wants him to think AND lead. He doesn’t lead, because that isn’t Gunther. She wants him to be what he is not. The Gunther of 10 years ago would have done the same thing in this situation, offer a solution but be too afraid to try it until someone else lead.

And, perhaps, that is where Gunther and Rosa compliment each other. He does the planning, she the “execution.” Gunth seems to have no difficulty keeping up with Rosa. I dare say Gunth and Rosa may be ever closer to “taking that shower….” Right Levi? :-)

OTOH, It looks like Quill and Lu are going the opposite way, I fear…. Apart from each other. I’m assuming though that it’s “Quill” that “OW’ed” in the last frame and not Lu, but we’ll see… I hope they make it to the dance in some form., if only to see whether or not Bern and Delta made it and what they might be wearing, or to see Tiff screw something up and get in trouble…. :D :D

It would be in character for Gunther (Bilbo Baggins) to have needles and thread with him. If not, they may be rejected at the restaurant and end up at McDonald’s. As far as Quill goes, he says “Here, Luann, let me h . . .” Help you? Hold you? Hug you? Did Luann hit him in her frustration?

Rosa wants Gunther to do the execution. She complained about it to Gunther. She even complained about it to Luann. She’s tired of telling Gunther to kiss her, or touch her, or even look at her. Gunther is not there romantically, and unless that part changes, their relationship has no future.

Rosa may want that, but she may need to compromise and accept things in “stages.” Right now, complimenting each other with “plan vs. execution” might be the correct stage, thus far. But it could lead to more execution on Gunth’s part later, if she lets this stage evolve naturally instead of trying to push it. As I said, Gunth seems not to have had any difficulties keeping up with Rosa’s “execution” this night. It might very well build up more fire in him to “execute” on his own. :)

I suspect Luann is angry at Quill for how “insensitive” he was towards her (which, of course, is all that matters to Luann) in his being so eager to go along with his roommate’s idea, instead of basing his decisions solely on the criterion of whether there could possibly be a downside for Luann. Quill is probably getting frustrated by Luann’s whining (note that she was the only one of the 4 not to agree readily to the plan), thinking “Why can’t she be more like Rosa?”

Would you be happy dating someone who, years later, is still afraid to initiate a kiss unless motivated by a competitor? I get stages, but this has gone on for a long time now. At some point it becomes a joke, which is why I don’t buy their relationship. Quill and Luann’s seems much more real in comparison.

If I knew my S.O. was capable of more, I’d surely wait. Some things just take time. Besides, it would be pretty shallow of me to dump’em just on that one thing alone. There must be other things keeping us together.

In Rosa’s case, I think she’d made the judgement that Gunth is worth the wait. I think she’s right. I hope she sees the progress he’d made tonight, and builds on it, gradually.

The order of events is probably off a bit, but anyways, the problem is GUNTHER IS AFRAID OF INTIMACY. THAT is the problem that needs to be addressed and worked on.

I agree. Maybe, having seen tonight’s progress here, she will be ready to confront him directly on that point. It’s hard for many if not most to know when it’s right to begin the “intimacy” journey. Unless you’re the type of person that always says “go for it” and isn’t concerned with the consequences of that mindset. I can understand and respect Gunth for being a little on the cautious side, especially when he hasn’t had much experience with girls showing interest in him. If he’s the kind that’s shown interest historically, only to be rejected every time (and he seems like that), he’s bound to be a little apprehensive when someone does show interest. I think Rosa will also have to confront him on that and resolve it with him before either can move forward. Tonight (after the prom) would be the perfect opportunity, I think.

“…When you get right down to it, they were successful just to survive getting across it.”^Basically! Usually when you’re talking about a field near a highway (tufts of grass, tall weeds, “prickly pear”, whatever), you’re talking about mostly flora that’s “not manicured”. It’s almost the same way you step through snow (almost), in the sense of where with each step forward, you’re meeting with resistance, and (in the case of tall grass/weeds) also wading through, and also trying to brush aside whatever is in your way…. that adds to your effort and time, in comparison to “normal”, “manicured” grass…..

in re Gunther’s shyness: there has been NO repeat of any hesitancy wrt Rosa shown, since the time he grabbed and kissed her in the hallway at school. all this commentary about his not being more forward with her is speculation not supported by any fact shown by the artist. Whether prompted by a bully or not, that moment marked a change from the “old Gunther” to the “new Gunther”.

Well, the “new Gunther” might still have some rough edges to polish. Snogging is one thing. Beyond that might take a bit more work from Rosa (both of them, actually). I think, with a little more effort from both, he’ll be “Good to Go.”

“to all those predicting it’s over between Quill and Luann: is that how YOUR relationships have gone? One little squabble or difficulty and everything’s over?! c’mon.”^To add to that, life is such that we’re bound to come across some sort of struggle/conflict/dilemma (not always severe, but not always “peaches and cream”, either). Nobody should want to go through a conflict, but one thing it does do, is to “show the mettle” of the relationship… that is the true purpose of dating, to get to know the kind of person you are with, to see the ways you deal with things. You don’t have to always agree, but moments like this show if this is the kind of person that at least reacts in a way that you can deal with, or even if they show signs of not being “right for a relationship” (e.g.: “fair weather friend”, “too temperamental”, etc.)…

They still would have had to cross the field, either way. And the limo would certainly take longer than 4 minutes to get there, unlike the bus, so they would probably lose their dinner reservations. As it is, once they finish their meal in the restaurant, they can take a taxi to the Prom.

“Gunther has done the same thing with Luann, so no big deal there…”^Not the same thing. Rosa has “hinted at” leaving Gunther, yet she still has given him a chance. Gunther (since the New Years’ dance) has been making the most of it…. – Luann has stated time and again that Gunther’s not her type (at least outward-wise, though inside, they are compatible, sort of.). Gunther has kissed them both, but just because he’s “tasted” both of their lips, doesn’t mean that both kisses are the same. The only person who can tell the difference is the G-man, and right now, the story hasn’t said if that’s a thing for him, right now. – We don’t know right now which way it’s all going to shake out, as far as “whom with whom”, so those horses need to go back inside the starting gate…..

. “…That will set things up for the way they should be, Luann and Gunther…”^I think this is really at the heart of what you’re saying…. you just are not liking Rosa, and ultimately want to see Gunther and Lu.. if it were to happen down the line, only time may tell. But right now, it’s all just us calling “heads and tails”….

If Quill has sent out photos of Luann on the fence, etc. (and especially if they get to Tiff) Luann may end up dumping him. .She has always been short of self confidence, cannot roll with the blows like Rosa.

the question isn’t whether Rosa is wanting to take Gunther “out of the comic”, but rather if Greg Evans does, which I believe may be the case … his character has run it’s course and may not be a good fit to the new Luanniverse brewing with graduation and the move to college.

Spot on. I think Gunth will end up with Rosa… wherever she may be going. I also think Quill will slowly fade away and get lost at Moony Uni., assuming he doesn’t go all the way back to OZ. They’re planning something new for Lu. Good choice, I’d say… it’s a new dawn.

Getting here late today is interesting, as skimming through the long string of relevant and irrelevant comments shows how some earnestly try to understand and comment on the strip while others continue to inhabit their own NeverNeverlands. It appears to me that it was just this last stretch of dense scrub and old growth (panel 1) that has ruffled Rosa and Gunther and brought down Luann and Quill. But Rosa and Gunther remain plucky and will enjoy themselves, it seems, unless they choose to sacrifice themselves to come to the rescue of One-heel Luann and Owie Quill (did Luann slap him out of frustration when he tried to help her?)….

We still don’t know what Rosa’s “Plan C” was. It will certainly determine her future as a character in the strip, and maybe Gunther’s also. (However, could “Plan C” have been “Steal Quill away from Luann and elope with him to the jungles of New Guinea”???)

Real troopers leave no soldier behind. Hopefully, while the G-man is rescuing Qu & Lu, Rosa will stay behind to hold the bus.

I just had to say…I can’t believe the creator is ruining their prom. I’ll bet Tiff is not having these problems. I’m upset for them.

As I see it— Over the last two weeks, I have been eagerly anticipating something bigger than people falling down and getting soiled. How many more days until a significant development occurs? Oh well, the night is young, but I just want to see more than a connected series of daily gags.

Way back when the Minneapolis Star-Tribune began carrying this strip, there was a situation which addressed the subject of teenage drunk driving. Aaron Hill ended up in the hospital due to being the passenger in a car wreck. If this current storyline does not include the role of Alcohol in Prom tradition, I will be extremely agitated, and write a nasty message to the strip’s creative team…

Great idea! That could be just the big break Gunther needs, as well as Rosa finally getting some life out of the guy…

I realize that. And I’d like to hook up with a girl like Rosa, as well, Unfortunately, Sofia Vergara is married! LOL

Vergara is, presently, not married, but “engaged” to that rich financial dude. She divorced her original husband (her childhood sweetheart, apparently), in 1993, after she had his son.

Still, I’m not sure I’d want to marry someone like that. Nothing against her, personally, but I know I’d still be “fighting off the competition” well after marrying her. :-D The “song of the day” would then be:

If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life…

Never make a pretty woman your wife…

So from my personal point of view…

Get an ugly girl to marry you… :-)

Well, maybe I woudn’t go that far…. but you get my drift… :-)

While reading your first two paragraphs, this very song came to mind before I saw you had posted it. It’s such a cute song.

“Gunther is afraid to do anything, the pressure builds up, and he kisses her. Then he goes right back to being awkward. "^I just presented recent evidence that he’s being made to “come out of his shell”, at least enough to “ride off into the sunset”, or to at least be “girl worthy” if he’s staying.

The only way he’s leaving, is if Greg writes him off to follow after Rosa. So unless that happens, he’ll be running into them perhaps as he is still slated to attend Moony with Bern and Quill….

Just because a bunch of characters are enrolling this fall in Moony Uni doesn’t mean the strip is stuck with them for the next 4 years. People drop out of college all the time. E.g., Quill shoots a screen test, posts it on the Internet, is offered a job working on a movie in Lower Slobovia, leaves to shoot it, and stays there. Or Gunther could just go do an assignment in the chemistry lab and never be heard from again. Apparently that’s already happened to mini-Elvis.

That is the question of questions, right now…. – There is a solid case for both. If this was a smaller “ensemble”, it might be a bit easier to figure out. But this is one of those crossword puzzles where you definitely need to get those other words, before you can get a handle on the first. – As Luann’s “support”, he may no longer be needed. But if something should happen to Quill or Bern, she really wouldn’t have anyone left to be familiar with. But as is the case with fish getting to swim in a bigger pond, they may eventually outgrow each other anyway. I’d say it would be a gradual transition away for Gunther, as opposed to right away.

I forgot to mention the way that some people out there want Gunther to “stick around”, the same way others keep bringing up Aaron Hill. They want to see a character they remember to be “the one” for Luann…They want to see Luann get with Gunther, and hope that Quill gets “knocked out of the way” for this to happen…..
