What part of “FOOD” is it the silly humans don’t grasp?

You were thinking of food. He just read your mind.

I have three cats. One exclusively gets canned food (because she’s old and had gotten super skinny). I feed her in my bathroom twice a day and let my other cats finish up what my old cat leaves in the dish when she finishes eating. I usually leave her in there for a couple hours so she has plenty of time to eat what she wants.

My old cat that gets canned food has learned to recognize the sound when I prepare her food. My other cats don’t come to that sound. Instead, they hang around the bathroom door when my old cat is in there with her food and rush inside when I open it.

They must use that pop-top type of canned cat food.

Would Povlov come up with the same theory if he was a cat lover? I think yes.

My Gizmo never shows any interest in food… unless nobody’s watching.

Just like I wake up odd hours all the time but my Husky knows when it is 6AM and wants breakfast now.

When I put banana on my breakfast cereal, I give the dogs a bit from each end. Of course they come running when either of them detects the banana being prepared.

I wanted to know how they knew, so I started by pulling the banana off the bunch as quietly as possible without wrapping a towel around it. Our mastiff/lab still heard it in the living room – no time lag while the odor wafted. Next experiment: take the bunch out back under cover of carrying stuff they didn’t care about out. I separated the banana there, but moments after I came in the dogs came to collect their payoff. They were probably first alerted by my behavior but they certainly smelled it from another room in seconds.

Occasionally they know things that completely baffle me. We must be the most clueless animals on earth.

We had cats until my wife developed an allergy to the one we had had for 12 years. He paid no attention to can openers

It’s true. Even though I’ve fed my cats from pop-open tins all their lives, when they hear the can opener they come running.

Sorry but doesn’t work that way. My cat gets treats that come out of a pop-top can. If I open a can of beans with a pop-top, he runs into the kitchen and starts begging.

If I open a can with a can opener, he pays zero attention. The sound is meaningless to him.

There is no cat more annoyed than mine when she comes running to the sound of the can opener to find that it’s not tuna, but beans or tomatoes.
