For most kids, that would be the truth. I always hated that the teachers seemed to expect that all the kids would have something interesting to write about, like a trip to Europe or something. Most people couldn’t afford to fly when I was in elementary school, and road trips are NOT FUN – they were torture in those days.

Come now Linus, you did more than read comic books and watch TV. You played baseball on the worst team in you’re area. You hung out with your best friend, giving him advice that is a thousand times better than he gets from the “5 cent psychiatrist” of the neighborhood. You took Snoopy on a secret mission that turned out to be his surprise birthday party. Biggest thing you did all summer was put up with your sister. And that’s never easy with girls like her. With girls not like her it’s easy, to a breeze, to highly enjoyable. Don’t ask her what you did over the summer because she’s clueless.

I usually turned these compositions into book reviews of everything I read over the summer…usually needed several pages.

My younger sister spent 1 summer in a cast from her neckto about mid thigh after having surgery for curvature of thespine. Then she wore a Milwaukee brace for 2 years!

No summer camp this time? Oh, yeah — they’re full of queen snakes! Getting chomped by a queen snake would make for good material, at least….

When I was growing up, our vacations mostly consisted of going to Noka Sippi Resort on South Long Lake near Brainerd, Minnesota!

A few years ago, I drove through the area, looking for the place. I was amazed, after close to 50 years, it was still there!

For our younger readers, Linus is not creating weird art, he is writing words in what was known as “cursive”!

My parents weren’t travelers. Which was not unusual for New Yorkers of that era. We visited friends in Springfield, MA one summer. If you’re going to drive all that way you might as well spend a week.

When we were stationed in Boston, we stopped by to see these same friends on our way down to visit our folks.

Linus has lovely writing. You can barely read mine at the best of times. I think my writing depends on what kind of mood I’m in.xxx

I can still write in cursive, however I rarely do these days. What I usually do is print in block letters because of my drafting education for a degree in engineering. Of course, my actual degree is in business, but I still frequently practice the block lettering…

I’ve never had a teacher ask for a report on what I did during the summer, but one ask for one on anything we wanted, while she was out of the room for half the period.

I wrote my observations on what the kids in the class did while she was gone. The teacher loved it. The kids, not so much.
