“Newtie still can’t equal the mangled sayings of the late mayorRichard J Daley of Chicago (mayor from 1955 to 1976):” Which is entirely beside the point: • Daley isn’t running for President (years after he made the statement you quote). • “Mangling” a statement isn’t morally questionable or revealing or anything bad at all (except grammatically). • If that’s all you’ve got on Daley (who’s dead and can’t defend himself), then I would suggest you stick with the real, true evil of Newt Gingrich’s words and actions.

FROM SATURDAY’S STRIP Sharuniboy: “How does Rove’s description differ from an illustration/explanation of the beginnings of/in Protestantism …?” dtπ: Rove’s description differs by:• coming around half a millennium later: a lot has changed between the time of Luther, Calvin, etc., and the time of Rove.• being supremely arrogant and false. Luther would have vomited at Rove’s “in God’s face” assertion that the Bush administration had the power to “create reality”. In Luther’s mind little if anything could be more blasphemous. God would surely smite America for such arrogance (as I would argue He did, given the sorry state of our national image and policy in the war’s aftermath). Sharuniboy: “How does one “reform” God? Or, perhaps more to the point, how did Luther, et.al. “reform” Him?” dtπ: One doesn’t. Nor did Luther. The Protestants reformed the church (or at least the part that broke off), not God.

FROM SATURDAY’S STRIP Fritzoid: “My sense has been that Rick’s trouble with Jeff’s book (at least in part) is not that it was published or that it might sell, but that it might be taken seriously.” dtπ: I agree. That’s why I invited readers to compare Jeff Redfern with Jay Gatsby (“hero” of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s most acclaimed novel, THE GREAT GATSBY). The two men, Jeff and Jay, are surprisingly alike.

Trudeau seems pretty obsessed with certain republicans. I wouldn’t be surprised if he has disturbing newspaper clippings and hate-scribbled notes taped to his walls in his room.I’m not defending today’s Republicans but he’s a bit obsessed.

You gotta love it when Doonesbury can let a political buffoon write his entire strip. The Bushisms strips were always great. No wonder Americans couldn’t stand G.W. Bush. When we collect Mittspeak, it will simply be a collection of juxtapositions, such as Doonesbury has today on its home page (http://www.doonesbury.com/strip): “I created 100,000 jobs”, “I created tens of thousands of jobs”, “I created thousands of jobs”.

It would be a truly exciting moment if Trudeau ever did a similar cartoon on Obama’s rhetoric, but when you wear blinders and drink the kool-aid, it would probably seem to him like defaming God. Pity. With a balanced brush he might have become a renowned critic instead of an in-the-bag hack.

The difference, Orion, is that I doubt you would suggest that Obama really believes there are 57 states, or that the soldiers were corpses. But do you doubt that Newtie believes every word he’s saying? Doesn’t that make some difference in your world?

“One sign of how absolutely desperate the GOP is right now is that they would actually float the idea of Newt Gingrich for president.” I don’t think they did. I don’t think the “top GOP dogs” wanted him to run, what with all his baggage and all. Now they seem to be grouping against him and in favor of Santorum (“Sanitarium Sam”).

I love how the right wingers are always waiting for similar treatment of Obama, in every strip GT produces. It never once occurs to them, that just maybe the data isn’t there. In other words, for today’s strip, Obama’s statements are orders of magnitude less nuts and contradictory, both in terms of quality and quantity than Newt’s.:Just once, I’d love to see a data driven argument from the right, instead of the usual personal animus. (Look it up, if you don’t know what it means – another useful tool – Google – usually ignored by the right). One can only conclude that it’s too hard for them to form an intelligent argument or they were never taught how to reason.

Ah, I think I see GT’s train of thought re the “personality cult” quote, and it derailed. He paired it with two other quotes communicating Newt’s grandiose aims. The necessary requirement for the personality cult is not big “look on my works, ye mighty” plans or even a big ego but big (and successful) PR. Exhibit A: Michael Jackson, the textbook personality cult figure..Newt and Frank fancy themselves potential builders of big things, and their egos are not microscopic. They have diehard followings, but those followings are rooted in policy, not personality.
