I suppose who has not heard of Dick Tracy? Obviously, his reputation and name preceded him. Hopefully, Tracy will have the information needed for this investigation when dinner is over. Oh well, he’ll have this moment to remember…dining with those from the academic world.

AHA! Confronted, Tracy admits of decades of covert crimes, tearfully confessing, “I FRAMED l my enemies! They were (sob) r-really nice, law-abiding guys! Many had cute pets and dressed them up in tasteful yet festive costumes!”

(Tracy recalls, in particular, Mumbles’ golafish dressed as Ben Franklin, complete with printing press)

MEANWHILE……….P1: well, I desired to see her stern…..not like Lizz’ in that shot last week, methinks…so I’m holdin’ my hubba-hubbas……….P2: looks like her…..mug shot?……..no, Dick Tracy the cowboy, or, or…..spaceman!!……orrrr……fireman? Wait! Wasn’t this my week to be Dick Tracy, Ringling Bros, clown?

She must be a ventriloquist. Not once did her lips move.

She HAS to be the murderer.

No action to speak of, but Shelley did a great job here conveying both a pause while X considers whether she’s being set up and the smile on Tracy’s face from a rear quarter angle. The absence of background was compensated for with a gradient given by the colorist, but it emphasizes both her gravitas as a rich heiress and the sense of grim dread she carries with her as her presence sucks the life out of the room. In the face of this, Tracy smiles confidently.

Today’s special guest star: Cate Blanchett. Beautiful and terrible as the Dawn! Treacherous as the Seas! Stronger than the foundations of the Earth! Tracy shall love her and despair!

OT: I buy the cheap brand Z quality pop. Looking at the motto now on the side of the cans, I see a new Tracy characters ‘Sip Freely,’ a genial wino who is inexplicably let into only the darkest of criminal doings and who then passes the details on to Tracy. It’s just such a spiffy name.

That pause is very suspicious.

1-XAVIEE: I belief it vas you who chust wolf whistled at me? NORMAN DESMOND: You bet it was! You remember that make-out session we had after the big game between Choate and Richsnoot?

2-Either searching her memory or having a McConnell/Biden moment

3-XAVIEE: You vere chust leafing I belief. But shtay, please. A Devil’s Threesom fills my passages with such passion. DT: Errr…I bet but maybe some other time. Like the 3rd of NEVER. XAVIEE: Such a disappointment. I vas so looking forward to riding your chin.

DT: Really? Saddled or… XAVIEE: Bareback ov course. Your nose vill keep me from sliding off. DT: GET A DOGGIE BAG, NORMAN! WE GOT US A DATE!

I don’t like her. Not at all.

Very subtle changes in Xaviera’s expression through the three panels (well done, Shelley). She is as close to inscrutable as an attractive wealthy heiress can be! In panel 1, she is her impeccably correct self, back straight, chin, up, shoulders back. In panel 2, she has a hesitant moment of thoughtful reflection. And in panel 3 she assumes a more defensive posture while verifying that this angular-chinned visage confronting her is indeed the legendary Chief of Detectives of the Tracyville P.D.

What lies behind that comely but nearly affectless face? Might she be hiding guilt, or might she rather have information that will serve as a major clue for Tracy?

As long as Owen Cormac Desmond doesn’t spoil the moment, this should be a crux, one way or the other….
