One quote and two questions come to mind: Anthony Weldon’s 17th C. advice, “Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me” and Obi-Wan Kenobi’s query, “Who’s the more foolish? The fool or the fool who follows him?”

While at the Faith and Freedom event over the weekend, Donald Trump shocked the audience when he started making moaning noises.

In a new video, he made sounds while holding up his hands.

Of course, people were appalled at the former president. One person wrote, Oof that man is repulsive," while another said, “An idiot.”

A third person shared, “No way this is real.”

Trump appears to be more mentally ill than usual.

Republicans want to expunge their sordid history.

More specifically, McCarthy last week publicly endorsed legislation that purports to remove from the official record of the House of Representatives the 2019 and 2021 impeachments of former President Donald Trump; expunging the record of those proceedings as if they never took place.

A move such as McCarthy now supports would be in keeping with actions by Winston Smith, the protagonist in George Orwell’s prescient 1984. Smith’s job in that dystopian world was to cleanse history by erasing news accounts of disfavored past events or people.

As an institution, the House of Representatives was deemed so important by the drafters of our Constitution, that its description in that document precedes that of all the other components of the federal government. To now have members of that body acting as modern-day Winston Smiths is disconcerting in the extreme, even if the measures fail to win majority votes.

The first bill, introduced on June 12th by Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), would expunge Trump’s 2019 impeachment, “as if such Articles [of impeachment] had never passed the full House of Representatives.” Ten days later, Greene’s fellow Republican, Elise Stefanik of New York, introduced a Resolution with the similar goal of expunging the 2021 impeachment of Trump, “as if such Article had never passed the full House of Representatives.”

These resolutions are not the first time a Republican House member has introduced a measure to expunge articles on which Trump was impeached, and it remains unclear if either of these latest measures will make it to the House floor for a vote.

I know. I know. But…. Let’s all imagine that ex-president Trump actually did what the cartoon above shows him doing. When it’s his turn, he pulls the docs from the folder, waves them in front of the class, calls them “secret” and “confidential,” provides a brief summary of the info therein, and concludes his presentation by calling them “cool.” And also imagine there’s video and audio of his presentation, and it’s played on dozens of news outlets, social media, and numerous websites. It still wouldn’t matter. Right, because all over America, the day after this was shown, millions of Trump followers and everyone over at Fox News, Newsmax, and America News One would be saying stuff like this: “Well, Hillary Clinton shared classified documents during Show and Tell at over 700 elementary schools, and she never once got permission from the principal to do this. Now, can you explain why the DOJ never had a problem with that? And why did the DOJ initiate a purchase requisition for over 700 hammers? What do you do with hammers? Maybe, uh, smash video tapes?” Watching the gyrations these folks have gone through (See Mark Levin, Sean Hannity, and His Orangeness.) to make the case that this latest audio proves nothing, you’re really moved to think that, as many say now, we’re living in a post-fact world.
