Supreme Court appointees used to be less partisan and most were confirmed unanimously or very close to it. And the kind of corruption we are now witnessing was unheard of.
While running for reelection in 1956, Republican Eisenhower nominated “moderate” Democrat William Brennan to the Supreme Court to demonstrate magnanimous bipartisanship en route to a landslide electoral win. Brennan, of course, turned out to be one the most liberal justice in Court history and the mastermind of liberal strategy in cobbling together majorities. Famous quote: “You have to be able to count to five.”
Richard Nixon appointed reliable conservative Warren Burger as Chief Justice, and then sought his advice on who to nominate for an open spot as an associate justice. Burger recommended his friend and fellow Minnesotan Harry Blackmun, and Nixon made the appointment. Blackmun, of course, would succeed Brennan as leader of the most liberal bloc and was the one who wrote the majority opinion in Roe v Wade.
By the early 1980’s, early in the Reagan era, conservative masterminds and strategists were frustrated by seeing liberal justices appointed by Republicans, and organized a systematic and coordinated effort to ensure that it would stop. In 1982, they founded the Federalist Society, an organization of conservative legal scholars funded by wealthy conservative donors that would study the writings and judicial history of potential judicial appoints (for federal trial courts, appellate courts and, especially, the Supreme Court), make recommendations and vet potential nominees.
If I didn’t already know that Thomas is totally without judicial merit, this story would have convinced me. But remember: There’s no law requiring him to behave like a supreme court justice, just the force of custom and conscience. Both of which he ignores.
Clarence Thomas is a slime ball and should be removed and tax audited for all the nice gifts he’s been accepting for 20 years. And take his trash wife with him !!
When was the last time the three liberal women didn’t follow the DNC mantra as a group? For all practical purposes they are bought and paid for too. Clarance should be censured but all 9 justices should always be required to explain what in the Constitution justifies their ruling. I am not so sure Robert’s unwillingness to overrule Congress would be valid.
Thomas is blatantly, arrogantly, proudly, completely corrupt and we will…do nothing. Meanwhile the other cons on the court will jealously try to catch up.
Oh, come now. The Thomases accept vacations, meals, recreation, donations, and other financial largesse and are able to keep all that completely separate from Clarence’s legal responsibilities and Ginni’s political activities. There is no ethical problem. None. And if you need iron-clad verification, let me add: George Santos says so.
So, according to the Heffalumps, Bragg is owned and controlled by Soros, so he must be corrupt, but Thomas being owned and controlled by Harlan Crow is JUST FINE AND DANDY!!
Carved over the main entrance to the Supreme Court building are the words, “Equal Justice Under Law.” Bids are being taken to replace that adage with “What Passes For Justice To The Highest Bidder.” /s
Long past time for Thomas to resign-together with his coach Ginni-or be impeached for bribery. Anyone who votes for a republican senator is voting to keep Thomas. Next up: Alito,
Billionaires, and those who control billions as corporate execs, have a virtual Tardis of pockets for all the politicians they hold. (and yes, that includes judges).
When Thurgood Marshall died, the Republicans needed a Black conservative to replace him, and the other one was out of town. If Clarence Thomas had been a Black liberal, or a white conservative, his name would never have been on a long list of possible nominees, let alone a short list, simply because of his lack of experience. (Also, as we later discovered, his lack of intellect and ethics.) I’d like to see an investigation of all the justices—how much does Kavanaugh spend on beer, for instance, and who buys it for him. We already knew Alito loves him some big payoffs for making speeches, of course. (You would have to pay ME to listen to Alito for more than a minute or two.) As for the so-called “umpire”, Roberts, who likes to pretend that he only calls balls and strikes: he might need his eyes checked.
I find it amusing that the radical right always screams about Soros. He doesn’t have nearly the money that the rightwing billionaires have, nor does he have half the influence they do. Just compare him with any Koch. And boy, does the right love to flaunt their wealth.

Very good, sir! We knew he was several sorts of criminal. For one, I believe Ms. Hill. He doesn’t belong in anything but a bathrobe. At home.
