Dick’s fedora has its brim snapped down and crown less creased than usual. Maybe his memory—or mine—is fuzzy on these fine points from way back,,,when exactly i# this? Shortly after Patten became hus partner?
“No public parking in front the bank” … but several other strips like yesterday’s showed cars parked in front of the bank. The inconsistency gremlin strikes again.
“Darn those bank robbers. Always parking illegally.”
I mean, I guess this is a classic Hollywood MO for a bank robbery. Maybe it was actually typical. I would think though that if I were going to rob a bank, I would have a more covert getaway planned.
Again, Mike insists on treating Tracy’s coat as if it were some sort of superhero uniform. That was never Chester Gould’s intention. Within the strip, the characters are supposed to see Tracy’s coat as a quality camels hair trench coat (Feb 14 & 15, 1947). This silly “Oh, look! A yellow coat – it must be Dick Tracy!” business ruins the idea of Tracy as a detective in plain clothes, especially in the earlier days when this story is supposed to be taking place.
1-DT: That fat guy in the driver’s seat… NERO? WOWZER! A TWOFER! I solve a case AND get to write a parking ticket!
2-ED: Hey. It looks like Nero is getting a parking ticket from somebody in a yellow trench coat. Is that something regular citizens can do in this town? BLOWSMOKE: THAT’S TRACY YOU IDIOT!
3-FLATHEAD FOURCYLINDER: Tracy? And he doesn’t know we’re in here armed to the teeth? Well, won’t this be easy! Fish in a barrel! Easy peesey, give my lemon a squeazy! NOTHING CAN POSSIBLY PREVENT ME FROM CARRYING OUT THIS CONTRACTED HIT! Here Teller – keep this cash. I’m about to make a lot more money for the cost of a single bullet! GOOD RIDDANCE, TRACY! I’ll be almost embarrassed to take Zeck’s money! Have I mentioned how easy this is going to be???
SOBBING IN THE CORNER OT: SO, I’m getting auditions or the audio of the new book, and so far ALL have been from overseas and had accents. I believe one was Slavik but I couldn’t follow the read.
Today’s was a bit on the Carnaby Street side. I mean, smooth read, but I have trouble imagining her handling the 5-6 fights and monster scenarios in the book.
… I really wish this didn’t need to be said again, but Dick Tracy’s hat/ trenchcoat combo is not supposed to be a bright yellow “superhero costume.” To my mind, it was traditionally drawn that way, either because of a more limited scope of color printing years ago; an effort to use bolder and brighter colors to make the “Sunday Funnies” jump out at you with bright colors; or perhaps as a way to make Tracy stand out and distinguish him to the READER’S eye as the “star” of the strip… or maybe a combination of the three. For that reason of tradition, I don’t want to see a change in how he is drawn, but i think an important (and obvious) fact is… to the eyes of the strip’s characters, IT’S JUST A REGULAR #@$%ING TRENCHCOAT!!!ok, thanks… I feel better now…
You know what’s comical about this comic? Flattop is wearing a mask, but his flat top is in full view. Fat lot of good that mask is doing in hiding his identity!
Somebody in Mr. Zeck’s employ did not do their homework. How was Blow and Flattop to know there is no public parking in front of the bank? They are from out-of-town.
Blowtop wanted to get money (Federal Bank) did not plan on crossing paths with cops. And when crooks cross paths with Dick Tracy, their lives are never the same.
Tracy was already well enough known to the Underworld that the mere sight of the Famous Yellow Trenchcoat put the fear of the Law into the gang! Ed, a lefty unless just momentarily transferring his pistol while holding the door with his right; Blowtop with his tommygun; and the indisguisable Flattop collecting the cash behind the counter from the sweaty bank employee are all primed to take a powder ASAP.
And Tracy doesn’t even yet know there is a crime in progress! He thinks the putative getaway car is just some parking violation. —And what’s with his fedora, without its snapped-brim (front down, back up)?

Good morning™, everyone!
Tracy is on the scene and he has spotted them parked illegally. Apparently, Flattop has heard of Tracy, even if Tracy has never heard of Flattop.

Is “dang” the toughest word that criminals in Tracyville can think of? It seems like a lot of criminals uses it. Not even a grawlix.
Well at least Tracyville has “soft spoken” crooks.

And in real life, have any of YOU ever owned a purple handkerchief?
