I remember telling myself the same thing. The only thing those whippings achieved was to make me resentful. My relationship with my own grown kids is much happier.

Taking away video games for a week would punish Baldo, Gracie not so much, you would need to take her books away for a week

My dad’s fault was being a terrible tease, he wouldn’t stop. I vowed I’d never be like that – and I wasn’t. He did spank, but only on rare occasions when it was really deserved. I think I copied him on that.

I have to agree that spanking nowadays is not all that effective. Caning on the other hand …

My coworker used to take his kid’s DS and then play it himself.

Yep, you have to figure out what works for each child. My daughter you removed from the social scene. My son was harder…you could send him to his room and he’d just read the dictionary!

Isn’t just saying “Now think about what you’ve done.” enough?

The only thing hitting a child teaches is that bigger and stronger people get what they want.

Yep, addict your kids to the tech and then take it away when they misbehave…

Baldo and Grace are very well behaved children. You rarely see them do anything actually bad. They are nice to others, do their schoolwork and help around the house.

When it comes to spanking, I learned better from it… How to better Not Get Caught. Robert Heinlein summed it up nicely in one of his books, a parental figure, Lazarus, spanked his very young siblings for lying, so that next time they lied they’d do it a lot more convincingly.

I remember once, at about age 8, I knew that I was about to be punished, and I was hoping that I would get a spanking that would be over quickly, rather than losing my allowance.

My Dad had two punishments, the old fashion “Talking to” and a few licks across the behind. If given the choice, I always took the Licks. The “talking to” tended to last much longer.
