Massive student loan debt is hurting the economy by preventing many of them from being able to buy homes, cars and start families.
But hypocrites like Mitt Romney denigrate the loan forgiveness. Romney’s company Bain defaulted on a $10 MILLION government loan. As Bain was failing, rather than use the available cash towards the loan, Romney paid it out as executive bonuses and then declared bankruptcy.
Let’s see. FPOTUS had the gov send several rounds of stimulus checks to people during his COFEVE-19 pandemic. He also pushed the passage of the Paycheck Protection Program for businesses and non-profits. And, of course, he strongly pushed for the passage of massive tax cuts with absolutely no commensurate cut in federal spending. So, yes, let’s bash Dems and President Biden for being fiscally irresponsible … /s. Your Alt-Reich pablum is tiresome, Ms. Benson.
Mitch McConnell: “President Biden’s student loan socialism is a slap in the face to every family who sacrificed to save for college, every graduate who paid their debt, and every American who chose a certain career path or volunteered to serve in our Armed Forces in order to avoid taking on debt,” McConnell wrote in a statement. “This policy is astonishingly unfair… This is cynical and outrageous but perfectly in character for these Democrats,” McConnell added: "Taking money and purchasing power away from working families and redistributing it to their favored friends.”
Pierce: “Mitch McConnell tried to take health-care away from every one of the groups on which he is so tender here. He passed a tax cut out of which most of them didn’t get car fare. He couldn’t muster a single Republican vote for a bill that would have helped those who “volunteered to serve in our armed forces” and came home sickened by the toxins in battlefield burn pits. He fought against an infrastructure bill that will help the “graduates who paid their debt” get to work without their roadways falling into a river. He rigged the Supreme Court so as to take away essential health-care from the 51 percent of Americans “who chose a certain career path,” and then blocked a legislative effort to bring it back. Mitch McConnell is a charlatan without a single ounce of sympathy for anyone except his donors. And his idea of “socialism” is anything they don’t like.”
I think that whoever approved these loans in the first place should help pay them back. As soon as they get back from their all-expense paid trip to Hawaii, the bonus for approving one million dollars in loans in one week.
It’ll do until they reverse the Gingrich law and return to the balanced one of 1978: Bankruptcy if hardship proven, Chapter 13 until five years, then Chapter 7. Suddenly the greedy loaners can’t prey and government cares whether the students acrually get decent employment. Then what to do about ridiculous tuition. However, equal protection of the laws should apply to bankruptcy, and close the loophole Drumpf’s been using to steal from his creditors.
I see Lisa made the lifeguard taxpayers overweight. I guess that means the lifeguards aren’t low to middle class, but wealthy indeed. So, it looks about right to me.
“The president can’t do it,” said noted constitutional scholar Nancy Pelosi last summer. “So that’s not even a discussion.” She added, “The president can only postpone, delay, but not forgive.” Anything of that sort would require “an act of Congress.”
Never mind whether this is the right thing to do, how about how it is being done? This move has all the Constitutional validity of using the CDC to extend rent moratoria.
The president does not have the authority to unilaterally spend billions of taxpayers dollars. This should go through Congress. Hopefully the courts will side with the Constitution.
How does Lisa feel about the fact that cities keep trying to collect monies for security at Trump Events. He refuses to pay. But hey, that’s not a problem, is it? /s
How about these Republicans who bear no responsibility for the PPP loans they aren’t paying back?
Members of Congress Whose PPP Loans Were Forgiven:Matt Gaetz (R-Fl): $476,000Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA): $180,000Greg Pence (R-In): $79,441Vern Buchanan (R-Fl): $2,800,000Kevin Hern (R-OK): $1,070,000Roger Williams (R-TX): $1,430,000Brett Guthrie (R-KY): $4,300,000Ralph Norman (R-SC): $306,520Ralph Abraham (R-LA): $38,000Mike Kelly (R-PA): $974,100Vicki Hartzler (R-MO): $451,200Markwayne Mullin (R-OK): $988,700Carol Miller (R-WV): $3,100,000
What is needed is to allow bankruptcy as a realistic option on student debt. It would force lenders to be more discerning in lending and colleges would need to lower tuitions because the money train would be partially derailed.
The rich benefit from the caste system that keeps college out of the reach of all but those who are already well off. They can pay wages that require two or three jobs per household just to keep food on the table, while they keep the majority of the GNP produced by the people who are living that way. And, they are assured that future generations will remain in that situation, since tuition isn’t an option.
The average college graduate pays about $7800 more a year in federal taxes than the average high school graduate. Over 30 years, that totals about $234,000. If that’s divided by the 4 years it takes to get a college education, the government would break even if it paid every student $58,500 a year to attend school. This doesn’t even consider that with the degree, the person is less likely to ever need unemployment or welfare, that more students would complete high school if they could see a clear way to a really good job, and that they would be enriching the Social Security and Medicare funds. They would also be paying a larger amount in all other types of taxes. The best investment we could make to keep America strong is to not just forgive all student loans but to make all higher education, including trade schools, etc totally free, as long as the student is making decent grades, and increase the number of schools and teachers to make room for all who can profit from the education. There is no better way to spend money than to invest it in our people, to give them every opportunity to be the best they can be. Yes, It’s good for them individually, but the country is made up of individuals, so what’s good for one is good for the country.. We don’t, even during a time of high unemployment, have so much a lack of jobs as we have a lack of people who have the skills to perform the jobs that are available- in other words, a lack of education.
Is advanced education considered a liability rather than an asset by Republicans? Is our future ever-increasing numbers of H1B visas to fill our job vacancies where advanced skills are required?
Socialism at its finest. Who always ends up paying for all this kind of thing? Those of us in the middle class, do. My husband could have applied for a student loan, but he chose to work his way through college. My niece did the same thing. There are alternatives to loans. Sorry, but I just can’t bring myself to support this, because it’s unfair to the people who worked hard to pay back their loans.

Lisa resents anyone getting a degree, and if repaying their loans is a hardship, so much the better.
And, God forbid, they become a professional. Republicans HATE professionals.
