No matter how good the dishwasher, unless it has a built in garbage disposal you have to get down and clean out the filter often if you don’t rinse the junk off.
I love how the impossible to clean cooking pan with the burned and caked on food comes out of the dishwasher looking as if it has never been used. Neveer happens.BTY – never put your Kitchen Aid beaters in the dishwasher using the super cleaner pod. The shiny blades turn a dull gray that can’t be cleaned and I ad to buy a new set. A friend had borrowed my mixer and was responsible for the damage. I never told her, however, not wanting to make her feelbad.
I have a little Bosch in my summer place. Eco means put the plates every other place but otherwise things get clean without rinsing. Since we are on well water there it’s important not to waste.
Doubling your work and water use to make your technology happy seems like a First World problem. But then it’s not unusual to to clean before cleaners arrive.
@stairsteppublishing- OF COURSE the dishes come out sparkling clean on TV! That’s to get you to buy the dishwashing product! That’s the whole ideology behind commercials. To sell us something.
We rinse everything, if even just a quick blast at the sink. It takes us days to fill the dishwasher, so it’s better to avoid having egg yolk dried on the small plate buried in amongst the the others.
My Bosch does a good job with pasta sauce encrusted plates. I never put the 13×9 in the dishwasher, takes up too much room. I rub it down with olive oil before building lasagna,it washes out easily.
I always rinse the dishes and flatware. Leaves less food to clean out of the filter. I figure the dishwasher’s best feature is it ability to sterilize.
I was told that yes, older dishwashers might need a little help with a rinse. But newer dishwashers might start eating into the flatware if the plates are already rinsed.
An energy specialist in my county came out and told me to use the normal setting and no dry setting for best efficiency, ignoring all the fancy choices and even the energy saver button! The water gets so hot most dishes come out completely dry anyway.

I don’t have to rinse mine but my daughter’s dishwasher sucks and you do have to clean them beforehand.

Usually my dishes are clean but I had a spoon that went through the dishwasher and came out with tomato sauce on it twice before I cleaned it by hand.

I’m disappointed, Ben. An appropriate retort would be “Sure he is! Tee he he!”

If l have to put the dishes thru a water stream might as well wash them right there. No need to spend electricity in the process…
