There have been story arcs where I could understand Gil being awarded a COTY, but lately he seems to stay in his office, drink coffee, and miss the obvious. Maybe it’s a lifetime achievement award for his 60+ years on the job.

At first I thought maybe this was another coloring mistake, that it wasn’t supposed to be Milford giving it’s own coach a coach of the year award. But there is a big M on the podium and I suppose the school awards the “Milford Coach of the Year” every year. And with Gil being AD and coach of 3 sports, I’m guessing he’s won the award 95% of the time.

It’s not that weird I guess to give a school’s coach of the year award. The other day I read an article in our local free small weekly city paper about the local high school, large school. The track and field coach won the “Spring Coach of the Year” award. For that school. So I assume there’s also a Winter Coach and Fall Coach award. Only of that school’s coaches. Seemed really odd.

Gil wins the award, for letting a blind kid pitch and endangering his life and the lives of the opposing batters. Runner-up is Mimi, for taking the softball team to an out-of-state game and leaving them there.

Wait, I need to go find a box of tissues. I can almost smell the angst coming in this story about how Gil turned a kid’s life around, taught him the meaning of teamwork, and stopped the Mohawk uprising.

Even though Rubin is gone, we can still make fun of his stories

Considering Gil is the AD, is it really surprising that he picked himself for Coach of the Year? But who’s the guy giving the award? An assistant we’ve never seen? Soccer, swimming, cross country, track, golf, or lacrosse coach? And that’s a pretty good award for someone who attended approximately 7 games and 6 practices between football, basketball, and baseball combined. And speaking of attending, you should be attending this week’s first publication of Mopped Up Thorp.
