A late colleague of mine had a saying that fits well here:

Calvin hasn’t thought this through. If everyone focuses on him, he will no longer be able to get away with anything.

Small children can be self-centred, but do little harm. It’s when they grow up to be corporate psychopaths, owning politicians who themselves are psychopaths, we have a problem.
