You cannot placate a bully. Tickling one isn’t all that bright either, I agree, but it isn’t going to be long until we do end up face to snout with this bully.
China has left itself a perfect place to react. There are small offshore islands still held by the Nationalists. Quemoy and Matsu, if I can remember the spelling correctly, though I would be amazed if the spelling hadn’t changed. When I say offshore, I mean just barely offshore. One of them is just outside the harbor of a significant city (significant meaning being a city of the skyscraper variety). A photo of it showed it as being not a whole lot further from the port city than Staten Island is from Manhattan. The Nationalists threw back an invasion right after China took the mainland, and there was, for several years, a sizeable amount of chest thumping and saber rattling by China, the Nationalists, and the US 7th Fleet, with the occasional landing of a shell or two on the islands. No trouble for about 50 years, now, as I recall. China is oh so patient. The islands are really meaningless, and they give China an opportunity to display strength, of both military and will, any time it feels the need to use it. Slapping an American president in the face might make this a nice time for them.
Since all you’re going to do is criticize the man for doing anything (or not doing anything), it’s essentially meaningless. For the first time since Nixon, the POTUS stated DISTINCTLY what US policy will be China seeks to invade Taiwan. Biden said the right thing.
And he did it without being a racist shithead like Trump.
I never guessed that the Right Wing would be such a bunch of sissies.
Prior to Russia’s invasion of The Ukraine, the Right Wing cartoonists here portrayed Russia as a ferocious bear. No it seems more like a teddy bear. It turns out that for all their posturing, they could not stand up to a determined enemy and western weapons. Corruption, a rigid mindset and wishful thinking fatally doomed the Russian military.
China has a lot of those things in common. They haven’t fought a war in 70 years. They may prove to be tough on the defense, but the offense could be very costly for them. I don’t think Biden’s comments were a gaff. Maybe a “gaff”, that is Biden said the quiet part out loud but his reputation allows for plausible deniability. Our way of saying, don’t get any ideas about starting with us.
“Gaffe” is spelled with an e. But I’m not convinced it was a gaffe. I think he may have said it deliberately. Not sure yet how I feel about it, but maybe we have been relying on ambiguity a bit too long.

Yep, biggest issue of the day. You can just see how much it matters here and throughout the world.

So Mr. Goodwyn would be happy to see the Chinese People’s Army Navy landing troops on Taiwan and the US doing nothing.

Invading another country is wrong? Would have never guessed. Mission Accomplished.
