My son cooks at a burger joint near campus. Most college kids tip well, (presumably, they remember working in the fast food industry). The ones who don’t tip at all are invited to take what they need from the little bowl of pennies. The ones who tip too little are photographed (everybody has a phone, right?) and their mugshots are pinned up in the break room aka storage area. They get even slower service next time. Soon, they don’t come back.

They do NOT murder or even damage such people. The boss hates the paperwork.

In any slowdown of the economy, 3 groups are the 1st to feel the pinch:

     – pets

     – waitstaff

     – non-profit organizations

If you have it in your means and heart to be extra generous to any of these, please do. Somebody else who wants to can’t.

Here the local restaurants have started adding 20% to the bill for covid cleanup for those that eat in. Irrespective of any tip.

Something tells me that no tipping policy isn’t accompanied by a living wage policy.

I tip wherever it is the custom. For those in any business who normally do not receive tips – register clerks, grocery store deli counters, fast food windows, etc – but who wait on me, I always close off with I hope you and your family are well. I usually get a kind of surprised look and a thank you and same to you reply. Kinda perks up the day.

and welcome back to no service to be had, as our waiters have all quit, gone on to better jobs elsewhere. Good for them.

once again, i’m glad to be living in a country where people just get paid for their job and aren’t left having to hope that customers will pay their wage along with the bill for the meal (or whatever service)…

Later tonight it’s “here we go again” time. As we prepare for yet another semi-annual episode of collective national insanity, let me point out to all prospective candidates for Congress that your one sure-fire campaign issue — one that would rally support from the entire political spectrum — would be to end forever the confusing, useless, expensive, and totally ineffective switching back and forth from Daylight Saving to ironically named “Standard” Time. For the love of God, just PICK ONE and stick to it!

The standard tip is 15-20%. And don’t forget, if the food is bad or not up to standard, it is NOT the waitstaffs fault. THEY typically get less than $3.00 an hour. I know you want to blame someone but they didn’t make your food.

I think this is a shameful attitude and practice and I’ve worked food service all over the Eastern US. It makes me want to not go out to eat again.

If you have ever worked in a service industry, you tip better. The world was a nicer place when teenagers of middle-class families had to put in some time at a burger joint. I stopped dating a beautiful woman when she was rude to a waitress. You are not better than service staff (and they handle your FOOD, idiot.)

Damn I hate those new card machines that calculate a suggested tip! Which used to be given for good service… Not for standing behind the cash register at a coffee shop.

In Europe and other civilised parts of the world service staff is not tipped because they are paid a decent wage.
