Maybe noted Libertarians Scott Adams and his rabid character Dogbert could advise Carmen’s campaign. (—

The Libertarian Party, the primordial goo from which the Tea Party, then the Magats crawled, please, Stantis, grace us with your original, profound, thoughts:

Read – A Libertarian Walks Into a Bear: The Utopian Plot to Liberate an American Town (And Some Bears)by Matthew Hongoltz-Hetling – for a good, practical introduction on Libertarians work.

Libertarians as a 3rd party have lasted quite a while, which is a noteworthy if not minor achievement.

Its nice to live in a country where the reach of two parties doesn’t reach to low level politics. We have quite a variety of regional parties and it works quite well. It keeps the national leaders from getting involved in regional issues.

Libertarian philosophy is actually counter to the natural advantages of the species. It is a new philosophy ushered in by the Industrial Age. The libertarian focuses on the individual to the virtual exclusion of collaborative action on a governmental level.

It is a philosophy for arrested adolescents. Me, me, me, me, me, me. You, on the other hand can go screw yourself. Libertarian behavior would not be tolerated by the more collaborative traditional cultures that have supported our species for a few hundred thousand years.

Libertarians are impractical, selfish, egotistical, and blind to the power of collaboration. If it weren’t for the massive collaboration made possible by technology, libertarians would never survive.

I should know. Iwas a libertarian.

To play devil’s advocate, classic libertarianism (as opposed to the current party’s platform) has its roots in the Enlightenment just as liberal democracy does.

Consider the first 5 articles of Thomas Paine’s “Declaration of the Rights of Man:”

    1. Men are born and remain free and equal in rights. Social distinctions may be founded only upon the general good.

    2. The aim of all political association is the preservation of the natural and imprescriptible rights of man. These rights are liberty, property, security, and resistance to oppression.

    3. The principle of all sovereignty resides essentially in the nation. No body nor individual may exercise any authority which does not proceed directly from the nation.

    4. Liberty consists in the freedom to do everything which injures no one else; hence the exercise of the natural rights of each man has no limits except those which assure to the other members of the society the enjoyment of the same rights. These limits can only be determined by law.

    5. Law can only prohibit such actions as are hurtful to society. Nothing may be prevented which is not forbidden by law, and no one may be forced to do anything not provided for by law.

For most of human history, there was little or no recognition of “certain inalienable rights” endowed by the Creator. Nowadays Libertarians might excise #3, which places sovereignty in “the nation” rather than absolute in the individual, but there are still Libertarians (not all) who would agree with the clauses promoting cooperative action for the general good.

The most ridiculous thing I’ve heard from the Libertarian Party is that being tested before being allowed to drive should be banned. How can anyone support this?

“There is nothing which I dread so much as a division of the republic into two great parties . . . This, in my humble apprehension, is to be dreaded as the greatest political evil under our Constitution.”

Your would think that after 50 years of failure they would just give up.

They currently have one (1) elected State House Member and 354 dog catchers, nationwide.
