Why when I was young (dirt hadn’t yet been invented), we had to SWIM to school and then grow legs!

When I was a kid, it was only a half mile to school. The problem is we had to go home for lunch.

It was a Catholic School and every morning before class we went to mass. So on First Friday, we went to mass received communion, came home, had breakfast went to school back home for lunch then back to school and then home again after classes.

Most of the kids were physically fit in spite of the fact we did not have gym or even reces

He should be smiling. The phrase always ends with, “And we liked it that way!“

I had it pretty good. We lived about 20 miles out of town and we had a car pool with other high school families. One of the families lived quite a lot farther away and on our way home their dad would occasionally land his small plane on the highway in front of us and pick his kids up instead of meeting us with his car.

I can identify with the comic but my father lived in Iowa so no up hill both ways. On the other hand, I had to walk a mile down hill on the side of a road that was always frost-heaved (crunched a lot) and it (seemed like) was always -12 °C (10°F). Except in the late spring when it was 90°F.

My mother grew up in Montana. She said they never had snow days. I said “well your father had a bobsled.”
