What touched me the most: Biles herself saying that the outpouring of support for her was the first time she realized that people valued her for more than just her gymnastics.
If Michael Phelps got into trouble the lie guard would pull him out of the water. If Simone Biles got into trouble, she could break a bone – or end up a quadriplegic.
It makes me so frustrated to see comments about Ms Biles not being tough enough or quitting on her team. We are talking about the same girl who was molested by her team doctor throughout her entire childhood and teen years, won the World All Around Championship title while passing a kidney stone, put her body through an extra year of training through the pandemic, added so much difficulty ro her routines that the judges literally do not know how to properly rate her skills because she is so far ahead of her time. All of this while maintaining her responsibilities to her endorsement deals, the media, personal relationships, etc. and some people can still honestly say “Simone Biles is a quitter”. Or she’s taking banned meds. That girl has endured more trauma inner 24 years than most people will see in their lifetime. For non-gymnasts, the fact that she balked mid-air and accidentally did a 1.5 on her first vault instead of a 2.5 is a big deal. It’s terrifying. She could have been severely injured getting lost in the air like that. The fact that she somehow landed on her feet shows her experience and is incredible. The margin of error on a skill move like that is thinner than razor thin. A very small wrong move and a career ending or even worse, life threatening injuries can occur

Just like armchair quarterbacks who can barely walk across the room shouting at the TV, “I can do better than that.”

One that has been down similar roads is backing her – Michael Phelps.

I don’t know, one way or the other, exactly what’s hit Ms Biles so hard. I will say this,
‘’Give the kid a break, you mindless morons.’’
That felt good.

A sad reflection on some.. that would rather see a “splat” than have a contestant take a pass.

Good for SB for recognizing she needed to withdraw rather than trying to compete and risk hurting herself or as she said, hurting the team.
