I suppose that Kelley thinks this makes them look stupid. And it’s true, it DOES make someone look stupid. But it’s not the Texas Dems. They just look desperate to try to salvage SOMETHING of their (former) democracy.
I am sure that the majority of Democrats would accept a voter ID law IF they started by:
First set up a system for all citizens to be able to easily get an ID, including making sure that all citizens can reach a place to get their picture taken for the card.
AND once every citizen has a card THEN write an equitable law.
Don’t right-wingers ever get tired of deliberately misleading people? This simplistic take on the Texas proposal is misleading and downplays the measures that would significantly negatively affect the ability of disadvantaged people to exercise their Constitutional right to vote and the odds of a fair election. No Republican official has yet to provide an explanation of why this bill is necessary given that despite desperate searches by many right-wing elected officials, lawyers, and groups, no evidence of voter fraud has been found.
(Thanks to Democratic pressure, the GOP has already removed a provision that would have shut down many urban polling precincts, and another that would have ended early voting on Sunday mornings, when many black churches do “Souls to the Polls” voter ferrying.)
Among the things in the current proposal:
- Forbids the state from removing partisan poll watchers unless certain election workers witness the poll watcher breaking the law, and the poll watcher is given a warning first making it a misdemeanor to “intentionally or knowingly refuse to accept a watcher for service when acceptance of the watcher is required by this section.” An election worker who pushes too hard to keep a particular partisan or disruptive poll watcher out of a polling place risks being jailed for up to 180 days.
- Makes it a felony for any public official to send many voters an application to vote by mail if the voter did not request such an application.
- Bans drive-through voting.
- Imposes limits on 24-hour voting options.
- Requires new identification requirements for absentee voters, requiring either the number of a driver’s license or state-issued ID card, the last four digits of their Social Security number, or a statement that they have not been issued such a number, all issues to retrieve or obtain for many disadvantaged voters.
So when Texas legislative Democrats use a procedural rule (quorum) to prevent a Republican majority from enacting a voting law, it’s bad. But when US Senate Republicans use a procedural rule (filibuster) to prevent a Democratic majority from enacting a voting law, that’s good?
My nephew and his family have lived in Texas for the last six years, as that is where his wife’s family is based. They moved back to New Jersey last month. Seems they have had enough Texas for one lifetime.
Even the Republicans who proposed this bill admit that there was no fraud in the last election here in our state. In that election here in Texas we had more participation in voting than we have ever had. That’s a good thing. We should want everyone to vote and participate in our democracy. This bill is make it more difficult for people, particularly minorities and the poor, to vote. That’s voter suppression. Their great fear is that if enough people vote, they will be voted out of office. That’s what this bill is about.
If you read the bill, what is one thing wrong with it?….don’t think it is making it harder to vote, just making it harder to cheat….why would anyone have a problem with that?
Abbot is afraid of Trumpette primary candidates, so he ordered these extraordinary sessions to shout his red meat agenda (transgender, abortion, critical race, etc.). Texas House Democrats need to lease housing in DC until our Texas GOP primaries are over.
By the way the "Matching signatures will only apply in Blue districts.
The same way that Florida’s law barring protesters from blocking freeways ONLY applies to BLM. When the Pro Republican Cuban immigrants ( Republicans “Good” immigrants ) block the freeway the police give them an escort.
What are the Democrats so afraid of? You need to have an ID for many things, and voting should be one of the top reasons. Claiming poor/minorities can’t get ID is very, very racist, insulting and demeaning. What a joke the Dems have become!!!
TX Republicans now want to arrest all of those Democrats when they return… they don’t realize that if those Democrats are all in jail then the Republicans still don’t have a quorum for passing their bills…
The Texas legislature has a filibuster rule that makes it impossible for anyone to prevent the vote for more than, perhaps, 24 hours. Republicans would never allow such a filibuster rule in a body where they do not have a majority.
What cheating? None was found that would’ve affected the outcome. I believe in some cases, the cheating benefitted the Orange Buffoon. So maybe Republicans should take a step back on this.
Steve, you’re leaving out the stuff in the bill that is actually what TX Dems is calling “voting suppression”: elimination of drop boxes, making ballot harvesting more difficult or illegal, empowering partisan poll watchers over election site officials, monthly purges from voter registration rolls, criminalizing a non-citizen accidentally registering to vote even if they never actually vote, banning extended hours during early voting, placing limits on who can can assist voters at polls or with mail in voting, etc. Thankfully they were able to force the removal of provisions like restricted voting on Sundays and allowing local election officials to overturn results without sufficient evidence of fraud. For all the claims that 2020 was such a secure election and Texas hasn’t proved any widespread fraud; what are GOP concerned about? Answer: the huge voter turnout that will continue in 2022 and 2024.
So now Kelley, if you can, turn your ‘talent’ to telling us in a cartoon, that since the last election has been proven time and again to have been, in the words of his own AG, Bill Barr, “The justice department has found no proof to back President Donald Trump’s claims of fraud in the 2020 election”, why the GQP NEED to change what is a lot more than mere identification issues. This is one of your own Steve, selected by your ‘Dear Leader’. Do you not trust him either? I know I don’t, nor do I trust those who slavishly follow him, or the party he has hijacked.

Here’s a simple question for Steve Kelley or any cultservative who reads GoComics:
Was there ANY significant voter fraud in Texas in the last election? Did it even come close to actually affecting the outcome of a single race?
(Okay, two related questions.)
