Terrible cartoon. Maybe we should concentrate of fixing the problems that make her not want to face the flag instead of attack her. Protests do not get more peaceful than what she did.

People protest violently and they’re wrong. People protest peacefully and, again, they’re wrong. People have a right to disagree and use their platform to express it. America’s not turning her back on Gwen Berry, only the people who don’t understand what America means.

Disrespect of our flag, the flag of the country that gives the freedom to protest any issue without fear of reprisals or imprisonment is foolish. Our flag should be held high and honored for giving everyone the opportunity to protest or disagree any issue. If you don’t like our country or its flag, you are free to go to any other country you want. Using the Olympics as a platform to protest against the country for which you preform is self defeating, not preforming would be a better way to protest. So please don’t preform for the USA in the Olympics because you are not wanted or needed. Go some place else to show disrespect and anti-Americanism.

The question is why would she want to represent a country that discounts her very existence? Cassius Clay(Muhammad Ali) was refused service at a local restaurant even after winning the Gold Medal in boxing for the U.S. It’s not that she doesn’t love her country. Her country doesn’t love her.

If my ancestors arrived here under the same conditions and experienced the same racism as well as myself, I wouldn’t have the warm fuzzies over the flag either. But she is representing the U S so at least go through the motions or let someone else go.

Even understanding she was caught unprepared I thought Ms Berry’s action was slightly offensive but not even in the same ballpark as the Ramirez toon.

She had no need to protest. She finished third. The other two athletes deserved their time without incident. She herself is not team player!
