Today’s Flag Day comic is really two comics in one.

First, there’s the vintage, Nazi-fighting art from Our Flag Comics #4. It struck me how different times were back in 1941 and how united we were (by the end of that year) against “the bad guys.” These days, alas, we can’t even all agree who the “bad guys” are.

Second, there was this incredible, completely over-the-top caption in the 1941 art. I thought it was jaw-droopingly bizarre, but also a lot of fun. So I decided to share it with you. But—fearing that the type would be too small—I enlarged it for readability. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Patriots needed now more than ever. And in short supply.

    Even in Canada.

Reminds a tiny bit of Marvel’s Captain America. Ironically, in the movie “Captain America and the Winter Soldier”, our Nazi destroying hero finds that a secret division of Nazis, HYDRA, have taken over a number of politicians and the American homeland defense department, SHIELD. The good Captain becomes a fugitive in the country he fought for 70 odd years ago. I tend to view the current rethugican mindset as the outgrowth of Nazism defeated in the 40’s. The ideals of white supremacy, authortarianism, and outrageous propaganda didn’t disappear, but have been embraced by a significant number of Americans. The Orange Horror Clown (i.e. EX 45) has well shown how fragile Democracy and the American Constitution really is, and how strong fascism can be in this nation.

It gets really interesting when he goes up against that super-criminal from Warsaw: The Pole.

Dude was ahead of the curve – we weren’t at war with the Nazis until the very end of 1941, almost certainly before this issue would have been created….

In 1941 there were plenty of people who strongly opposed entering the war in Europe. Mostly, these were the “America First” types who saw no reason for us to get involved.

The strong opposition to WWII has been forgotten, which is unfortunate. It makes us think that our current divided electorate is unprecedented. It is not. There was never a time when things were simple.

You’re a grand old flag. You’re a high-flying flag. And forever in peace may you wave. You’re the emblem of. The land I love. The home of the free and the brave. Ev’ry heart beats true. Under red, white and blue. Where there’s never a boast or brag. But should old acquaintance be forgot. Keep your eye on the grand old flag.

@John Lustig – What a great idea? I am a part of that generation. Yes, we knew who the bad guys where here and overseas! Within the last few years we seem to have lost thatcare and knowledge. Kind of sad!

We actually have a flag that flew over George Washington’s Mt. Vernon, but that isn’t the point. It is pouring rain and I as I am aging have shrunk somewhat, so the flag holder requires standing on my tiptoes, stretching and stretching to the very limits of my reach. After four attempts in the deluge, I grabbed a step stool and achieved said goal, but cussing was involved in the process. THANKS FOR THE REMINDER JOHN

I posted this elsewhere as a reply, but I wanted to make sure more people saw this. After posting the comic, I realized that I got the issue number wrong. It was Our Flag Comic #3, not #4. Here’s a link to a free online version of the entire comic if you want to read it:

When people say “America is not a democracy but a Republic” they usually mean;1) they hate the idea of democracy, that people are equal under the law;and2) they’d rather have a dictatorship, with their kind in charge, of course.

    Usually.
