From Wikipedia: “Fiddleheads or fiddlehead greens are the furled fronds of a young fern, harvested for use as a vegetable. Left on the plant, each fiddlehead would unroll into a new frond.”
They’ve been around as food for a long time. My grocery store isn’t trendy, but it has them with the veggies (when in season). Real ones, as contrasted with those shown in the comic, are small. I assume artist knew these are unrealistic in size but needed to show the spiral.
I ordered some with a veggie delivery out of curiosity and the note with them said they’d been harvested in the mountains. In other words, not cultivated. I looked them up: if you get the right kind and boil them long enough, they’re fine. If you don’t boil them ten minutes, and if you get the wrong kind, you’re going to be poisoned. Thanks a bunch. $11, straight in the trash. Cheaper than an ER visit.

I rank them up there with rhubarb- no thank you, very much. Mom tried to feed these to us. Some liked, some did not.

They serve a salad with fiddleheads at the Native American Museum in Washington DC. It’s pretty good.

uticaod.com reports that a Fiddlehead has an alcohol content of 6.2%, but then that’s a Fiddlehead IPA.
