The kid should just apply for unemployment. He’d probably get more $ than his dad gets at the office.

Four letter word alert. Surely he feels entitled and not required to w-o-r-k.

When I was a kid, my friends and I got allowances. But we also had expenses. My kids never did, but if they needed something, they could just ask.

Wilberforce needs to learn the value of two bits. Learning to set a budget while young will help him later in life. Also a pre-set list of chores and their associated compensation would be helpful.

What was an allowance? I had to work and cut the grass as part of living there.

I got a dime a week (that’s a whole 80 cents in today’s money). For that I had to mow the lawn or shovel snow and keep my stuff picked up. My folks had a long list of other chores I could earn additional money if I was in good graces for my basic chores. If not, then I lost that privilege and my dime and still had to do the chores. The dime went to my parents who had to supervise me if I didn’t do it on my own. BTW a dime bought a bottle of pop that you could drink at the local Rexall if you didn’t have the 2 cents deposit for the bottle.

Earn and work should be the first two four-letter words a kid learns.

Our 5yo grandson got mad at his ipad and jumped on the screen, smashed it all to hell. His mother told him that the allowance he gets(feeding the dog and cat, cleaning up after both)for doing chores-he was saving up to buy a new(used)to him ipad will now be used to replace the screen. And since that will cost more than his weekly allowance savings, until he pays for the new screen he will not get anything. I think that is a great idea, you are never to young to understand that actions have consequences. I am glad his parents are making sure he understands this

I got a $1 a week in return for roughly 30 hours worth of chores per week in the 70’s. We had a farm and feeding and watering the animals took me close to 3 hours a day, then cleaning out the barns, cutting grass or shoveling snow depending on the season, and whatever other odd jobs came up. I replaced my two older brothers when they left home to further their education. Some weeks my parents even had the $1 to give me, though that wasn’t all the time.
