Thanks JJ, I was clueless. I didn’t know her story. Everyone has one, but hers turned out to be quite a bit more than most.

A worthy tribute to a worthy recipient, but why today? It’s not like her birthday or anything. And what’s her connection to jonquils? (I’ve done my due diligence and Google gave me nothing.)

I see hundreds of daffodils every spring. I planted a bunch last fall, and they are getting ready to bloom.

Woman’s month and her hit “I am woman”? Jonquil is known as narcissus so maybe woman should like themselves????

The next line of the song is “in numbers to great to ignore”, which may help explain today’s strip.

My Daffodils were just starting to bloom when Texas was hit with a unTexas like snow, ice, and below zero cold spell. Now my Daffodils are just a flat, soggy, dead mess. I have no doubt they will come back next year but for this year they are gone. I actually lost several flowering plants and several trees in our neighborhood are suffering.

Quite amazing folks can start arguing about a comic strip. Afraid this world is a mess.

The Helen Reddy reference is apt because as others have mentioned, it paraphrases her signature hit, “I Am Woman.” The first lines in that song, for those unfamiliar, are “I am woman, hear me roar, in numbers too big to ignore.”Beginning with the first panel when there’s a single bloom, then more and finally a field of flowers, the spirit of the message is that the jonquils are here and signaling Spring in numbers too big to ignore. I don’t think the intent is to draw a strong connection between jonquils and roaring, rather to welcome the first day of Spring with an illustration of a ubiquitous Spring flower and using Reddy’s song to do so.

Nope. No one’s is an abbreviation of “no one is”. It was right the first time.
