I’ve heard this debate before. I disagree but I have heard it before.

If Indie and Marion hadn’t been on the island, the ark would have been left there for anyone to find. If nothing else, Indie is why it ended up in the warehouse.

Just to be clear, Indiana Jones was a grave robber, not an archaeologist.

Without Indy the Nasis would never had found Marion or the Ark, Without Indy The Ark would still be in the snake pit, Without Indy the Ark would have been flown to Berlin, Without Indy the Ark would never had been on that island in the first place.

This guy finds a 500+ year old temple and pays no attention to the inscriptions, or the traps that are amazingly still working. He just grabs a hunk of gold and runs. He’s not an archaeologist, he’s a tomb raider.

The “Big Bang Theory,” postulated that the results of “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” would have been the same without Indiana Jones.

Legal Eagle on YouTube suggest Indy should get a minimum of 75 years in prison for his crimes

So, Indy was “pretty useless”, eh? Let’s see her get punched a hundred times and still get the job done.

Useless? He was crucial to the plot. Umm, protagonist.

Raiders of the Lost Ark does have some plot weaknesses; for example, Egypt was a British colonial possession in 1938, so the Germans could not possibly have been there digging around without everyone knowing about it. But Indiana Jones was essential to the story, as a catalyst for the events depicted, if nothing else.

He prevented a large number of deaths.

Marion probably would have died without Indy. The only other way she might have survived is if she escaped during the bar fight and could not figure out where to go to recover the amulet. Otherwise she would have been captured, and not known to close her eyes when the Ark was opened.

Also the Ark would have been left out in the open. Sooner or later someone else would find it, and then someone else would figure out how to open it (I think it couldn’t be opened without a chant). And then the Ark would have killed a bunch more people, possibly good people. Then another team would be sent to investigate all these people disappearing, find the Ark, open it and die. Sooner or later someone would figure out the connection. Then most likely a government would use it as a weapon. Drop it in a major city, have someone on a suicide mission open it. Then afterwards send a team to recover it.

I’ll just add this: The Ark and its contents belonged to and were touched by God. God rigged the game to assure the Ark ended up safely hidden away. Just as it had been for 3000 years. Devine intervention is what happened here.
