Had the Wampanoag known that the people they saved were an outcast and outlawed puritanical sect [whose own vengeful god had already killed off half of the Mayflower’s complement], I don’t think it would have mattered much. Live & let live seems to be very powerful mantra for indigenous people. Not so much for the invaders— then or now.
“We’re all very different people.
We’re not Watusi. We’re not Spartans.
We’re Americans with a capital A.
You know what that means? Do you?
That means that our forefathers were kicked out of every decent country in the world.
Illegal immigrants, refusing to learn the languages, refusing to join the culture, requiring assistance in the form of food and medical help for several years and hostile to those already here. But some of them are “good people.” Thank you Mr Two Bulls. Again, right on target.
They were massively unprepared, arrived far too late to get in a crop, and apparently believed that God would provide. I sometimes wonder what would have happened if the locals had cast their cultural norms to the wind and just NOT helped them out… Though I’m pretty sure that if so, I wouldn’t be here TO wonder that.
Marty, it has been slow in coming, and not enough yet, but this past year has the courts ruling more in favor of Native Americans. Now comes the announcement of the Native American Esselen Tribe regained ownership Big Sur ancestral lands.
Have you ever wondered what might have been had Native Americans had a unifying leader, coast to coast, before the immigrants came? The ‘United Tribes of the Center of Everything That Is’ has a certain ring to it. I highly doubt that they would have separated immigrant children from parents and caged or killed them.

Best – Thanksgiving – Cartoon – Ever. One picture is worth centuries of opportunistic pathogens. Of course, I’m one of them.
