Never mind a quarter of a million dead Americans. Right, Mike? Just so long as we don’t go back to infringing on corporations’ rights to destroy the planet.

Hey, Mike. Stay off of MY roads, sidewalks, parks, beaches, etc. Be sure you only use privately owned utilities with absolutely NO connection to any publicly owned enterprise. Don’t call the Police, Fire Department or Ambulance unless it’s totally a private entity. If you can do that, go ahead and complain about the size of government. If you can’t, STFU!

How refreshing to get back to the REAL eternal verities wherein right wingers claim that democrats ALWAYS want more government that represses all kinds of rights and costs too much. Brings a tear to my eye, it does!

The Bald Eagle is a majestic bird compared to the Turkeys we have at the White House yet to be pardoned . . . . . or become road kill after being run over by a bus.

Republicans are all for a smaller government footprint in people’s lives – assuming, of course, that they retain control of uteruses, official religions, etc., etc.

“For my own part I wish the Bald Eagle had not been chosen as the Representative of our Country. He is a Bird of bad moral Character. He does not get his Living honestly.” As for the turkey, Franklin wrote that it “was a much more respectable Bird.”

You need a big government to manage a big population. What if New York City had two snowplows during a blizzard. It would be great to have minimal taxes until something needed to be done.

The Trump administration increased the size of the Federal workforce. https://www.brookings.edu/blog/fixgov/2020/10/07/the-true-size-of-government-is-nearing-a-record-high/. Mike, your team wasn’t fiscally responsible nor was it trying to shrink the size of government. It shrunk regulations.

Signature initiatives of administrations: Bush II – education. Obama – health care. Biden – climate change. Trump – build a f**** big wall.

What is Biden returning us to, again?

Maybe he farms it out to a third world artist?

We could try to think with a little more complexity. There certainly are times when government is too intrusive. In general I’m in favor of maximizing individual freedom and responsibility. But we need government for lots of reasons, and more than the minimal military and police force. Society is very complex, and there have to be a number of different kinds of institutions keeping each other in check. It’s pretty obvious that the business sector can’t be trusted to police itself. Over and over and over we see that corporations are happy to harm the public if they can increase their profits. We need government to oversee and regulate business. It would not be good to live in a society ruled by Amazon and Walmart. I’m in favor of individual solutions to individual problems, but there are also lots of problems which are social problems rather than individual problems. Public health is an obvious example. If someone wants to cut back on government, that’s fine, but I want to see concrete proposals with concrete reasons. Too often we see that sweeping anti-government policies do not have good outcomes. Individuals exist, but communities also exist, and societies need to take both into account.

Given all of trumps friends that got government jobs.. one does have to wonder just how much bigger government got over the last 4 years. Perhaps, less rules to hinder his friends.. but size, as in numbers, don’t think so

Well, Franklin thought the turkey should be our national symbol. Seriously, having put up with four years of a government that doesn’t govern and exists only to line the pockets of the President and his rich cronies, I prefer to take my chances with so called, big government. That’s a term that’s bandied about to describe a government that actually seems to care about everyone, not just the entitled few. I’ve been a Republican and Conservative for over 50 years and what we’ve just had to live through was neither. Wise up Michael.

I’m giving him until New Years until I unfollow… As a 4th generation Navy spouse, with one son who is a fish biologist saving endangered species with the US Department of Fish and Wildlife and another a nuclear engineer with the NRC, I do indeed support our government, local and federal. Did I mention, I recently retired from teaching in public schools, 20 years in Title I schools, no less? The government, when in capable hands, does good things for the people who need it and our fragile planet.

Actually, “big government” is very American. It’s just democratic, so everything works well.

Agriculture: With the Homestead Act, Lincoln basically enacted land reform, giving thousands of acres in the West to prospective farmers. Handouts!

Industry: For decades, American protectionist tariffs let American industrial might grow without competition. This was gradually supplanted by the individual income tax, but not before the US became the largest industrial power in the world. Government contracts and subsidies also helped.

Cars: The vast majority of automobile roads are built and maintained at the behest of the government. Not to mention that the federal government pretty much single-handedly bailed out the auto industry in 2009.

Military: America! F—- yeah! Also, entirely run by the government

Funnily enough, the eagle also lives in Europe, while Turkey is a uniquely American bird. In fact, I believe Benjamin Franklin actually wanted the turkey to be our national bird, viewing the eagle as a parasitic scavenger. Not to mention all of the association with European monarchies and the Roman Empire.
