“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning. We will remember them.”- from “For the Fallen” by Laurence Binyon
Very pleased to see some vintage art by the great Nick Cardy. (And very pleased to see some of the great duck stories you did with William Van Horn are going to be collected by Fantagraphics!)
Reminds me of a former college roommate of mine. During school he was a partier / dropout type, so it shocked me when he joined the Navy after graduation (he admitted later that he did it on impulse while high). He was a social-psychology major, and claimed that the military couldn’t “get into his mind”… he visited me during his first furlough after boot camp, and we went out to a popular restaurant. I was living in the DC area, so of course as we were going in there were a couple of women Naval officers coming out – and automatically he saluted them. They were confused since he was in civilian clothes. In the restaurant he realized that the military had gotten into his mind, and a lot of drinking ensued…

And when he gets to Heaven
To St. Peter he will tell:
“Just another soldier reporting, Sir
I’ve served my time in Hell.”

I thought something looked amiss (no pun intended). There is no apostrophe in “Veterans Day”.

Sorry, sweetie. My Dad (World War II, Korea) only had eyes for Mom.

From a Canadian veteran to all our allied veterans, I salute you. For our too soon departed brothers and sisters, we shall remember them. VVV.

Thank you Mr. Lustig. Not as many ‘salutes’ this year. Peoples minds are elsewhere.
