Um, no. Biden has not said he would close down the oil industry. He DID say he would foster policies that would help us as a nation transition away from petroleum-based energy sources because those sources are harming us permanently. He DID say, his policies are aimed at helping the oil industry develop cleaner more sustainable sources. By the way, the oil industry is working on that already because they see the writing on the wall. There are better, cleaner, more sustainable alternatives getting better every day. Why not create more of THOSE jobs.
The oil industry needs to transition away from providing its product so largely for polluting internal combustion. Oil will be needed a long time hence in the various manufacturing processes, as for plastics, lubtcants, and fertilizers. Of course, the extreme proliferation of plastic waste badly needs to be addressed. Can petroleum ever just be left in the ground? Not for a long time, it would seem. The oil industry will hold on much more than it should — it has been a source of such relatively easy wealth that world economies are now dangerously dependent on it.
He won’t have to. It’ll be like coal, the alternative to it will dwindle the industry, much like oil did to whaling, cars did to horse and carriages, internal combustion engines did to steam.
You can try and halt progress, but you tend to get left behind in doing so.
“I would transition away from the oil industry, yes. The oil industry pollutes, significantly. It has to be replaced by renewable energy over time. We’re getting rid of the subsidies for fossil fuels, but we’re not getting rid of fossil fuels for a long time.” – Joe Biden 10/22/20
Mr. Biden has proposed barring new oil-and-gas leases in national parks and on public lands, not a nationwide ban on fracking. Most fracking takes place on state or private land, so a Biden plan would have a limited impact on the practice. Tax reduction [currently, you pay the oil companies’ taxes] can provide the incentive for cleaner burning fuel production.
• The insanity of our government subsidizing — freely giving away our tax dollars — to super profitable industries must stop
• Electing anyone who is not committed to reducing carbon emissions is a form of collective suicide
Transition means transition. It is a matter of survival, and from here on out anybody who successfully runs for president will surely support transition to clean energy. Almost all of our transportation, housing, and manufacturing are powered with fossil fuels. No one [least of all Joe Biden] would or could ‘shut down’ the oil industry in the foreseeable future.
It’s going to be a long process, too long to have a huge impact, but necessary nonetheless. (You have no idea how painful the thought is to someone who considers the sound of a flat-plane V12 winding out to be as great as anything Bach ever wrote.)
The one gaff that Joe made.. Republicans stopped listening just after the “shut down the oil ind………” and started printing head lines. Why the oil industry continues to get subsidies (and not just oil).. should be looked at.. but won’t, because they have a very powerful lobby group.. with tentacles reaching our side of the fence as well.
Please read your Schumpeter Mr. Breen. It’s called “creative destruction”, replacing an existing thing with a better thing, and believe it or not, it’s actually a core tenet of entrepreneurialism and free market economics.
Theory is one thing, but let’s apply it to, say, political cartoons. Once published only in physical newspapers (my first job was a newspaper delivery route) the internet has changed the physical newspapers and delivery routes model into a more digital based subscription service, and now political cartoons are being published on the internet so that cartoonists can widen their audience and keep earning.
We need to look to Canada for guidance. When they have unemployment due to industry changes or advances in technology they educate their unemployed to take new jobs. They just don’t give them a few week’s unemployment and forget about them. If this is truly a government for the people of the people by the people that maybe we should start taking care of the people.
Why are Republicans so fascinated with the past and an industry that clearly going to diminish in the future? This is like the insane promise a few years ago by Trump to revitalize the coal industry. We can’t live in the past no matter how desperately afraid Republicans are of the future.
The worlds reliance on burning fossil fuels is the cause of global warming, which causes climate change (despite what science deniers say). There is also the fact that the sale of oil is a very big part of what gives Russia (the main supplier of oil to Germany and others) and some Middle Eastern countries so much economic power. A switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources will cause a major shift in both international interactions plus the fortunes of some people and companies. Which one bothers the republicans?
Actually, Despite another deranged claim from THE ORANGE IDIOT, Biden never called for the closure of the oil industry. He only said that he would help in the transition from fossil fuels to more environmentally friendly energy sources for the American people.
MOST adults actually understand that as time moves on, things change, and we adjust our opinions, plans, friends, politics, heck even diet choices, to meet what we perceive as the current situation. Not the GOP, though, because if it was good enough for super-great grandad Urgh the caveman, it’s BOUND to be better for us now.
It must be hard to continually defend a pathological liar like trump. I guess resorting to distorting the statement by Biden as the only thing he can do.
The big companies are already working on rebranding as “Energy” companies, not oil, and investing in various alternative sources. And hoping that someone doesn’t finally get fusion reactors into reality.

It’s all about the money. The fossil fuel industry has suppressed renewable energy for decades. That’s all coming to an end.

Breen, the absolute most important thing is that we continue to pump as much greenhouse gas into the atmosphere as possible.
It’s so good that you realize and support this effort.
Congratulations.

Well, the people that made horse harnesses and reins didn’t like the automotive industry taking over.
Those people that threshed the wheat by hand didn’t like the big machines taking over.
It’s just what happens as the world progresses.
