Back then nobody thought slavery was a bad thing, such as Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, the slaves and especially the slave owners themselves. Right Mr. Lester?/s
As soon as you start thinking that folks from long ago should have acted on YOUR modern ethical thoughts, nobody’s safe. I have been proposing / supporting the idea that we should have no public art that depicts actual humans. Some folks are pushing for “no pubic art” period, but I think that’s a sad idea.
I have to agree with the founding father’’s culture of the 18th century, but not those who committed treason in the 19th. Still, move the history to museums instead of the public squares, and the only flag should be the one that now has 50 stars.
Many of these statues were put up in the 20th century by some people who didn’t like the standards their society had adopted and wanted to take the country beck.
Judging by the shadow, it looks like Don Quixote, who was finally stopped by his own reflection.
Slavery has been around for at least the last 3900 years (Wikipedia – History of Slavery) and has never been right. While it’s relatively easy to bring down the reminders of our past, changing the way people think and how we treat each other is not. We start with ourselves.
In the 18th century, many people already thought that slavery was evil, even by the norms of their time. That’s why some colonies outlawed slavery, and why the French revolutionaries did the same (until Napoleon shamefully restored it).Heck, even in the middle-age, the Church outlawed it.
There are certainly some folks who judge the 18th century folks by 21st century standards. There are also certainly some folks who WANT to inflict the 18th century standards on select 21st century folks. They know they can’t so they say “We just want to go back to when things were better.” If tearing down confederate statues sends the message of “NO- you don’t get to inflict your standards on us” – and that message is being heard- Good. Kaepernick peacefully protested- and is still given sh1t over it. If that message isn’t being heard then the folks sending it will likely try to find newer ways to get it thru. Those will be almost certainly be worse than knocking over statues.
I am a descendant of Nathanael Greene, a Revolutionary War General. There are several statues of him that I’m aware of including one in DC, one in Savannah and one in Greensboro, NC which is named for him. But seeing the moron mob and Pantifa know very little about the History of our great country, and the vital role Greene played in the success of the Revolution, it has me waiting for the demands to remove those statues and the vandals to creep out of their mom’s basement in the middle of the night.
We.. everyone single one of us, is alive today because of the sins of our forefathers.. Let’s not get too hypocritical and move on. Education is the key, tearing down statues is not.
Ironically, Lester is calling for “moral relativism”, that is to say you can’t judge any society by our standards now, as every society has its “own truth”. Of course, that thinking can lead to accepting as “for its time” some unspeakable things such as slavery, the oppression of women, religious bigotry, etc.
Oh, hey…I just noticed I just won $40 in a pool. With the mob going after Teddy Roosevelt that completed the Mt. Rushmore Quartet square I bought. Nice! :)
Once again, this seems more than little disingenuous coming from the guy that thought carrying an AR-15 and screaming in a cop’s face because you have to get curbside pickup at Lowe’s is A-OK.
Let’s put that “hate America” to a test of questions and answers.
Q=Who opposed our War of Independence? A=Conservatives; 50,000 abandoned the colonies to side with Great Britain. Gen. Benedict Arnold led 10,000 of them to England.
Q=Who refused to endorse the Constitution before it was sent to the states for ratification? A=Conservatives.
Q=Who started the Civil War trying to destroy America to preserve slavery? A=Conservatives.
Q=Who practiced Jim Crow law for decades to deprive American citizens their rights? A=Conservatives.
Q=Who engaged in lynchings of black Americans for decades? A=Conservatives.
Q= Who fought against the equal rights the Fourteenth Amendment promised for a century to protect? A=Conservatives.
Q=Who murdered civil-rights workers in the South during the quest for civil rights A=Conservatives.
Q=Who openly waves the Confederate Flag of Treason at public events? A=Conservatives.
The answers to these important questions show who really hates America.
Of all the nonsensical aspersions cast by both wings, the “hate America” is by far the most hyperbolic. Anybody with a functional neuron or two could accurately predict that a poll seeking to find how many citizens “hate America” would come up nearly empty-handed.
It’s also an opening for idiots to cause damage for no reason…this reminds me of the Salem witch trials….the hysteria spread with no rhyme nor reason….what a sad country this has become….violence rules…..
When it comes to confederate statues, I’m pretty sure we’re the only nation in the entirety of human history who allowed the traitorous losers of a war to lionize their “heroes”.
In the nineteenth century such people were seen as traitors who fought to defend a heinous institution, tearing down monuments to them seems to be treating them as they would have bern treated at the time.

Lester admits he prefers 18th century social standards. Well, at least he’s honest about why he votes Republican.

The standards for Treason are the same now as when the Constitution was written.

No, we’re not. Americans knew that holding other people in bondage was wrong, long before 1865.
We were one of the last nations to outlaw slavery and the only one that had to fight a war to do so.
We should all still face our failure at how long it took us to ban slavery.
We should all still face our failure at how badly we treated the former slaves.
We should all still face our shame at how poorly we treat African-Americans today.

All future statues can only be horses with no riders and no names other than the horse’s. I don’t care how many hoofs are in the air.

When you’re tearing down statues of Washington, Grant, Columbus and WWII it ain’t about the Civil War or slavery. It’s because you hate America.

Well it isn’t the 18th century anymore. Time to modernize things and get some more relevant statues that represent 21st century norms.
And don’t go pretending that people didn’t know that slavery was evil in the 18th century.
