The election of 1876 was so corrupt that to prevent another Civil War, Tilden offered the presidency to Hayes if Hayes promised to end Reconstruction. Hayes did. And Jim Crow took over and we are still trying to undo all that. It took 100 years for a civil rights act and a voting rights act to hit the books. How long for them to be observed by every jurisdiction?
The 1968 Chicago riots, in the United States, were sparked in part by the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr.
For eight days the protesters were met by the Chicago Police Department in the streets and parks of Chicago while the U.S. Democratic Party met at the convention in the International Amphitheater, with the protests climaxing in what a major report later said was a “police riot” on the night of August 28, 1968.
Governor Ronald Reagan had been publicly critical of university administrators for tolerating students . On May 20, 1969, National Guard helicopters flew over the Berkeley campus, dispensing airborne tear gas that was banned by the Geneva Conventions which landed on civilians and elementary schools.
Please note that, over the weekend, it was announced that segments of the United States military – not the national guard – would be ready for deployment, at the request of any governor indicating need.
This is yet ANOTHER reason our founding fathers rejected the idea of a “standing army”. (and it had nothing to do with they being prescient about the “flake” currently residing in the White House)
LBJ is truely one of the most conundrumest POTUSs ever. Escalates the Vietnam war, ordered FBI surveilance of Martin L. King, Jr. yet signs the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Also gave interviews while sitting on the presidential porcelin throne. (feel free to add an “h” on that adjective…)

Now to find a way to distinguish the protestors form the vandals … or doesn’t that matter?
Personally, I doubt that legitimate protestors would harm the businesses in their own community … like shooting yourself in the foot.

Protesters? These are rioters. Arson and looting aren’t protesting. And franchises are fair game? They don’t involve people and jobs?

I doubt the part about the Air Force was on the books in 1878.

“We don’t have time for people’s rights.”
Ha! I love it! I’ll bet more than a few U.S. presidents have thought that, even if they didn’t say it.

Makes me sick, that we keep making the same mistakes over and over again.

The only way the police “escalated” the violence was by refusing or being forbidden to deal with it in the early stages.
