Never mess with a man’s coffee Farley. It doesn’t bode well for you in the end.

Doggy rule number 1: Never switch from the hand that scratches and pats your head to the coffee hand.

I think Lynn Johnston has written a note about this before, where she talked about Willy her small, black spaniel in her fifteenth anniversary collection, It’s the Thought That Counts (quoting):

One of his most endearing traits is his tendency to nudge your arm (if he can reach it). If doesn’t require a great stretch of the imagination to put a hot coffee cup at the end of that arm. Drawing the results is then pure pleasure!

But both arms look the same to Farley.

He either really needed that cocktail or had one too many. Jeesh.

Poor Farley… our Jelly does that too, thankfully not when we have hot beverages!

LOL! He loves his dog, but the dog better not try to compete with his coffee!

“Nudge, nudge” usually means, “I need to go for a walk!!”

    Lynn’s Comments:

This little vignette was the real thing. Farley has no idea why he was in trouble for something he’s been doing over and over again. You gotta love this stuff!

Awww. Sometimes you don’t know the difference between the left and the right until you get in trouble.

I never yell at my dog like that, what a jerk. Life is to short.

I know some people like the attention hound, Farley. They nudge, and nudge, and nudge, until you tell them off out of shear “you have had enough, already!”

Why does he not have an end-table next to his chair, with a coaster for his cup? As soon as Farley began moving to his left side, he could have put the cup down, or at least switched it to his other hand. Now he owes poor Farley an apology for being so mean.

Why is he surprised? John could see the dog walking to the other side of the chair.

Too many of you are missing the point of this cartoon – the problem is the poor dog isn’t understanding why this time he was being yelled at when the other times he was petted. He doesn’t get that he spilled the coffee.

Actually Farley wanted the last drops of coffee. My female dachshund waits til my wife is done her coffee, because she knows who gets the last couple of drops. Doesn’t hurt her.

Dogs, and children, learn what they are taught. That’s why so many have poor behavior.

The cover of the second “Ben” comic strip collection has their dog, Max, smilingly nudging sitting Ben’s elbow where the hand is holding a cup of coffee. Big splash.

The Enjos would never yell at the Patterson’s dog. They would love to have Farley for Thanksgiving.
