As a kid, i could take or leave clowns. They entertained but didn’t impress me. Later they acquired this menacing persona that i still don’t understand, but I don’t watch them anymore. I don’t think I’m missing much. Ya’ll enjoy.
Text of the joke as told in Watchmen:“Heard joke once: Man goes to doctor. Says he’s depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain. Doctor says, “Treatment is simple. Great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up.” Man bursts into tears. Says, "But doctor…I am Pagliacci.”

And now the news: the great clown Pannichi was involved in a minor accident today. But doctors say his condition is…not serious.

Here I am, pushing 60, and clowns still creep me out.

Knowing they’re all crying on the inside, just like Pagliacci did, leaves me even more depressed.

Robert Ripley stated that the old anecdote was true and had originally happened with the famous clown Joe Grimaldi.
But Ripley was often full of it, alas.

The Great Paradox:
Comedies are funny;
Sex is funny;
The French are funny;
Yet French sex comedies are never funny!

It’s true. Clowns range from pathetic to grotesque.
