I should forbid you for rebelling. Except you don’t actually want to go, so forcing you to would be a better punishment.

Mom knows her daughter well, Phoebe even missed that she was being manipulated into going to the dance.

From what Mom sad in the third panel, did she have this kind of experience in an elementary school dance?

So either Emily didn’t have someone to dance with or more likely had to put up with a partner she didn’t want to dance with.

And I’m sure that Phoebe will dance with Max. Obviously just to annoy her mom, rather than subconscious feelings she totally doesn’t have for him:-).

In real life, would reverse psychology work on a nine-year old?

I think this was double-reverse psychology on Phoebe’s part. She actually wanted to go to the dance, but didn’t want to look like she wanted to go. So she manipulated her mother into manipulating her into going. Now she can be one with the crowd while rebelling.

Give mom a DhP. Because that woman deserves a doctorate in reverse psychology.

Mom knows how to handle Phoebe. Maybe she could even get her some kittenheels.
