When what you have is inadequate, but still better than nothing, you hang on with all you’ve got. Even if there’s something better just a step away… because you’re scared to let go. This is one of the basic truths, which Big Insurance and the GOP well understand.
A fairly large proportion of those “55%” have pretty good to very good coverage. That’s still a minority of the overall population, but they don’t care: “I’ve got mine and want to keep it.” Most of the rest of the “55%” just don’t understand how bad their coverage is because they haven’t had to try to use the part of it that isn’t there.
Maybe those people should be tied to a chair…and forced to watch Michael Moore’s “Sicko”, though for Republican voters that would likely be a pain they wouldn’t enjoy.
The fiction that USA is number one in everything is held by a large portion of the populous. I read a question on a forum asking UK citizens how overwhelmed they are by USA technology. All are in agreement, totally underwhelmed as they can’t believe we are that backwards. One did acknowledge he was awed by all the motorized carts he saw people of large mass using in stores.
I am for anything that will stop me from having to figure out which card I need for which coverage, and remember if I need to get a referral before seeing a specialist, and filling out forms at the doctor who, it turns out, isn’t on the plan offered by my new job. I don’t want to get bills a year after surgery telling me “oh, the anesthesiologist didn’t bill you yet. It’s been a year. Pay up *now.”* or worse, a collection agency call because you moved and never got a bill at all.
But really, I’m just so excited…. it’s almost “open enrollment” time.
Although not my first choice, Elizabeth Warren put it best when she said we don’t want to keep our insurance company, we want to keep out doctor. I suggest you should ask your doctor if he or she would not provide services to you if Medicare for All was instituted. I did, and nothing will change. Should we expect medical providers to purposely go out of business? Where is there alternative.
The main reason people want to keep their current insurance is they believe their employer is paying for it and they are getting it for free or almost free. Most individual policies (average $600 month) premiums are paid 80%-100% so the employee only sees < $100 taken out of his pay.Actually the employer is just withholding the premium just like they withhold income taxes. If instead the employee got a $550 month raise and then had to write a check to BC/BS for $600 they may change their mind about keeping their old insurance
Yeah, some people’s willingness to fight for inferior (#28 in the world, fails to cover millions) and overly expensive (#1 in the world, and 50% more expensive than #2) healthcare must be attributable to masochism. Or stupidity. Or blind loyalty to what they are told by FoxNews or #45. Or all of the above…
Consider what you won’t need once M4A is implemented. Private insurance. Medicaid. Workman’s comp. Car insurance for bodily injury (or the liability insurance for physical injury). Medical savings account. “Medicare” Part D. The patience of Job to fill out myriad forms. Drugs to help deal with the anxiety of waiting and waiting and waiting for medical bills to arrive.
Some people also find the repeated examples of a sadistic woman dominating a masochistic man painful. Are there no examples of sadistic men and masochistic women to be found? Or is misogyny the type specimen here?
I hate it when I get a letter from M** Life telling me what additional cost they will not be covering for my dental, health. An unpleasant surprise. I call it a love kiss from Snoopy.
About 70% of adults never reach the highest cognitive state of critical thinking. I’m sure there’s a lot of people who want to keep their private health insurance in that group and also a lot of conservatives.
I have a doctor in the family, pretty Progressive, It’s his opinion that if M4A would ever kick in, there would never be enough physicians to do the work. There is already a shortage. Also, maybe soaking the rich to pay for the change might not work, or take too long. Mayor Pete, or Biden’s approach makes the most sense to me.
How come no one knows it’s “my [insert name or noun] & me, not my [name or noun] & I” ?!!! Ted Rall should know better. Most folks use “I” because they’re afraid of seeming low-class by saying “me.” They have overcorrected from incorrectly using me instead of I in a sentence like “Me & Joe are going to the movies” instead of the correct “Joe & I are going to the movies.” All you have to do to figure out whether it’s “me or I,” is to omit the other person in the sentence. So “come watch me,” not “come watch I.” Or “It’s fine with him/he & me/I” just drop the noun/pronoun, because “It’s okay with I." is obviously incorrect. The correct sentence is “It’s okay with me.” So “It’s okay with him” NOT “It’s okay with he” And NOT correct with “It’s okay with he & I” & NOT “It’s okay with I.” The correct is “It’s okay with him & me.”

I’d bet most want to keep what they have due to fear of the unknown. Of course conservative fear peddling fuels that fire.

Some people find bad grammar painful. That should be “watch my lover and me have sex”.

Whip yourself into shape with an annual physical. Doogie Howser and Queen Latifah have given private health insurance the thumbs up.
