I never use self checkout at all. It is just a low skilled job killer.

I was never a self-checkout fan, but I have been doing this at our Walmart because I am going in to buy, literally, one item…something like batteries. And the majority of registers are full of people with a week’s worth of groceries. Do I want to wait for 15 minutes? No. Very easy to scan, pay and get the hell out. And yes, there is someone standing there in case help is needed (and probably to ensure that you DO scan items and not just toss them in a bag, bypassing the scanner).

Self Serve only if you get the employee discount.

Our grocery store of choice has no self-checkout. Winco is owned and operated by the employees, who understand they are part of the reason people keep coming back.

Jerks on both sides of the register. Anyone who’s worked retail can relate.

When asked to used the self checkout, my husband always says: I don’t work here. Not only does Wal-Mart not pay living wages to their employees they are trying to phase them out completely.

“It takes the jerks out of the equation.” It takes the community out too. When the “jerks” (really each of us at one time or another) no longer get to see how folks should interface, and no longer feel the desire or need to fit with others, they (we) become “jerkier”. Community is how we become civilized; it’s how we see the need for common direction and common good.

I shouldn’t be saying this because, as a terrible introvert, I also like to avoid human contact. The truth is, that casual human contact more often turns out pleasant than “jerky”.

I am an intravert who lives alone. That interaction with the cashier is often the only interaction I have all day. It makes my day, unless the cashier is unpleasant. Self-checkouts robs us of jobs and human dignity.
