No cultured beef yet… but plant-based_ “hamburger” patties are already here.
I’ve seen a brand called “Beyond Beef” right next to the beef patties in the meat department.
Unlike like other available vegetarian patties made from soy, mushrooms, or whatever … these are lab-produced to (supposedly) have a taste, texture…. even juice…. like beef.
I thought about trying them…. but a package of two 4 oz patties costs around $6.
Even beyond the fact that they’re very processed, and come in in way too much packaging….
I’m not paying $12 a pound to taste vegetable “beef.”
Actual cultured beef is on target to arrive in a couple of years… but is still way more expensive to produce.
Who is it for? Not for vegetarians, cos it’s grown from actual beef.
I agree with Arlo…. it’s funny to me that certain “principles” don’t count when some people get blinded by saving the planet.
Not that I don’t believe in doing that… I do!
But I don’t go overboard.
I wonder whether people who won’t touch hot dogs cos they’re processed, buy all natural and organic food, eat local, and all that other stuff…
will throw all that aside to eat super-expensive, over-packaged, lab-grown beef,
that at this point still takes way more energy and resources to produce than actual on-the-hoof meat.
Simply amazes me that people who seem to think that GMO’s are the work of the devil can’t wait to munch down on a Chemically Modified Organism. No thanks, I’m not a big beef eater but I’ll stick with the cow, farts and all.
Mankind did not rise to the top of the food chain to just eat a bunch of plants. We have evolved to eat meat and dang it! I want to have dead animal on my plate!
How insightful. How many times have we been told that hot dogs were not healthy? They are same people who have been responsible for halting the use of hardy GMO vegetables that could aid feeding the worlds hungry. Hot Dogs may not be as healthy as Kale, but it is natural; and how could a COSTCO foot-long dog and a pop for $1.50 not be good for ones health? It is even good for the soul!
I look forward to the day we have commercially viable lab-grown meat. Until then, vegans and vegetarians can hate me all they want.
I’m also reminded of a button I saw some thirty years ago. It said: “I’m not a vegetarian because I love animals; I’m a vegetarian because I hate plants!”
Reminded me of a skit by Garrison Keillor. His wife assured him tofu was good for him. It would add years to his life. He concluded they probably wouldn’t be the best years of his life.
There was a TV show a few years back about a guy who worked for a huge company, the name escapes me. Anyway, they had developed a product like that, and the first time they tried it, they said it tasted like “despair.” It was kind of funny.
On the other hand, I got to sample some meatballs made from “Impossible Meat,” the all vegetable “meat” that is now on the market. If I had not been told what it was, I would not have known it was not beef. The taste, and texture, was perfect. I was blown away.
